Description
Alrighty, here's a map of the fantasy world I'm developing for an upcoming HARP game. This map was done entirely in Photoshop, with Greenfish Map Generator providing the coastlines.
Special thanks to RPG.net for providing "sites of interest" and for the Cartographer's Guild for help on the mapping elements.
Keep in mind this map is not yet complete. There's stil a lot that needs labeled, I just thought I'd show you what I've been working on lately.
Be sure to click "Download" to view in Full-size... Warning, this image is over 1mb and it's not even full-res.

Reminds me the map from witcher, or at least the version from Czech books

Ever notice, how most fantasy maps commonly make use of the western and northern quarters of the paper? Seriously, look at the map of Middle Earth in the LotR. Check out Sarah Neumeier's novel "The Floating Islands". Even "The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom" trilogy focuses its landmasses on the right side of the paper.

Hey there, great map! I'm trying to create one myself and was wondering what pattern you used for the feathered mountain layer. I've been exploring a few that I have found and I'm probably just technically doing it wrong, but I was wondering which you used.

How did you create the mountains? That's my question
π: 0 β©: 1
Tensen01 In reply to Lukc [2011-11-05 10:21:33 +0000 UTC]
the mountains were created using a heavily feathered brush layer with a bevel and mountain-like texture added.

Man, what a great map. Are you preparing a RPG campaing? I sugest you to increase the nunber of islands, it would be more real in my opinion. But I can say that's a very nice work.
Sorry my poor english

Tensen01,
I'm dying to know what program you used to make this map! I've got three maps in my online RPG forum that I'm trying to combine into one big map and tie them all together. I've tried dozens of free online programs and they all suck and some aren't even there anymore. Any helpful advice you can offer to my search?

This map was made 99% in photoshop, with the coastline generated by Green Fish. But photoshop is pretty much the only program I use when it comes to maps.

Is Photoshop a pretty general program? Where would I get it and how much does it cost? LOL Sorry to keep bugging you but I've got my maps drawn onto actual paper and I fit them together the way I want, now I just need to get them on the computer in a 'real' map format.

Tensen01 In reply to MtnRose81 [2011-09-30 17:28:25 +0000 UTC]
Photoshop is the ultimate general art program in my opinion. Sadly, if you want to purchase a legitimate version it's very very pricey. But if you're a fairly web-savvy person there are numerous ways to gain access through less legal means.

Sir (or Ma'am, I don't know you personally), I fancy myself as something of an amateur writer. Lately, however, I've found myself in a bit of a slump. Fanfic is all well and good, however I need something new, something fresh. I was wondering if I could use the map that you have created (though you claim it's unfinished, I think it looks just GORGEOUS) as a setting for some (or several, it really depends) of short stories, or even a small series. Would you feel comfortable with my using this version of your map? Or, do you have a more up-to-date version?
Thank you for your time,
-AJ "offlight" Ralph

One more quick question; do you have anything in particular in mind for the "sites of interest" or the appearance of the constructs of the different races? Or, (if you approve my use at all) would it be alright if I "fill in the blanks" as it were?
Always,
-AJ "ajofflight" Ralph

Tensen01 In reply to ajofflight [2011-06-03 16:28:39 +0000 UTC]
Yeah you know what, go for it. I'm never gonna use this map for anything, especially since I lost the PSD file. So if it can get the creative juices flowing for someone else I can't stand in the way.
And as for the Sites of interest: [link] that's where they were developed.
The races were in my mind pretty stereotypical. The only ones not typical were the Halflings who live on the Vaerren Steppes. They're kinda Mongols meet Sami/Laplanders. Tribal nomads who ride large dogs.
And if it helps, I thought of Vestinia as kind of Britain, Royce as Italy/France, and Savonia was kind of a Theocracy based off of Russia. Garran is kind of Barbarian Scotland.
But also, feel free to do whatever you want with it.

Don't suppose you have any of the PSDs or PNGs of the icons, do you?

Tensen01 In reply to ajofflight [2011-06-05 07:07:48 +0000 UTC]
Sadly no, everything associated with this map was lost in a hard-drive crash.
It might be possible to recreate them, depending on which icons you mean. Most of them were made using various Photoshop shapes that I probably still have.

Me and my crew were really enjoied by your work.
So we wanted to ask you if you could do a map for our new italian RPG game online based on the film βAvatarβ by James Cameron.
We can't offer you money, but your name, and the link of your page in DA, will be exposed on the site as a thank you.
Could you do this for us?

Well, I there's a button in the program that lets you save the map, then I just opened them in PS, copied and placed them in a single picture... if that makes sense.
If you're using the program what I did was made the image 1000x1000 made all the water colors white, all the land colors and outline was black and made sure the Grid number was 0 and turned off the cities.

You need to hold an online class. I've got my basics, now to color it bwahaha..(Seriously though, online class for gaming mapmakers, I usually hand draw mine though.)
