Description I'd always notice these shoes hanging on the power lines on the highway out of town. They were up there for a couple years, but I guess someone finally got a ladder and claimed them.

That's not true at all, sometimes i see shoes on the telephones on the line close to where i live. Its an old tradition that says your staying in the city or town that you threw your shoes in.
The shoes is a way of showing your commitment to staying in the town and saying that your never planning on leaving.
Its very poetic, but seeing the comments its a lost tradition

I see that around here too. I always figure its the work of some bully picking on a smaller kid by throwing his shoes up on the wires

That wouldn't surprise me in this case. It's right across from a high school.

Yea... I was always the new kid, because we moved every 3 years (military brat).. but fortunately I was well over 6 feet tall by 6th grade so I didnt get much bullying...I saw others getting it though

Only with a good throw, or a ladder.

=o So the shoes were put there with some luck or some effort? Then maybe they shouldn't be removed?

Someone actually told me what those shoes on the phone line stand for....it means there's drug dealers in the area...I'd be careful there

Haha, it's possible, but it's no worse than most other parts of town.

there are streets in DC lined with these shoes. The legend I've heard (and I'm pretty sure its true) is that the shoes are flung up there as a tribute to someone who died.
