Description
People spoke, laughed, and shouted while a light wind blew in the cool January night. A man named Marshall stood by a street light finishing a hot dog he recently bought from a hotdog cart down the block. People of various different race and age walked by him laughing and singing loudly. Some were already half drunk and it was barely nine twenty at night. He wore a grey winter coat with synthetic fur around the hood, his pants were a dark black and he had light brown Timberland boots on his feet as well as a light green backpack on his back. In the distance he could hear the faint sound of steel drums playing Jungles bells and other Christmas songs accompanied by a trumpet. He smiled and leaned against the streetlight and looked to the sky as he listened. He heard his phone buzz in his pant pocket and reached in to grab it. He turned it on and saw there was a notification on the screen from his messages app. He took a final bite of his hotdog and crumpled up the paper it was in and stuffed it in his pocket. Marshall then swiped the screen and tapped his messages to see a text reading “ 9:45, Brooklyn cruise terminal, grey and red boat, use code “ The venators” will be paid upfront.”. Marshall closed the app and turned off his phone and placed it back in his pocket. He stood up straight and turned towards the busy road to flag down a cab.
After about a minute he saw one of the yellow vehicles turn the corner and drive down towards him. He lifted his right arm up and whistled out to the cab which turned and drove up to him. Marshall opened the back door of the cab climbed inside the vehicle. “ Evening sir, how are you doing?” The driver asked politely. Marshall sat down in the far left of the back seat and placed his backpack on his lap. “ Fine, you?” He asked the driver. “ I’m fine, thank you.” The driver responded happily. The driver then turned his head around to face Marshall’s. He was a young Chinese man with short black hair wearing a white T shirt. “ So, where are we heading to?” The man asked.
“ Going to the Brooklyn cruise terminal. It’s like across the bridge or something.” Marshall told the driver who nodded and turned back towards the steering wheel and seemed to plug the coordinates into a GPS before sitting back up straight in his seat. The cars engine made a low humming sound and the vehicle started to drive off. Marshall connected his seat belt and lay back in the seat, his head turned to look out the window to see the city passing by. The car stopped at an intersection briefly then turned right and continued down the block. Marshall reached into his pocket and took out his phone and checked the time, 9:30 pm.
“ How long you think this ride will take?” Marshall called out to the driver. “ Depending on traffic, no more then 15 minutes. I’ll take Carey tunnel if you’re in a rush.” The driver answered. “ That will do.” Marshall said and the driver nodded again. The car sped up slightly and made a quick left. Marshall opened his messages app and texted back “ be there in 15” and hit send. The road dropped a bit and the cab drove inside of a large rectangular tunnel. The car started to speed up more as the continued their decent in the tunnel. “ So, what are you planning this evening?” The driver suddenly asked. Marshall felt a small pinch of nervousness and scratched his head. “ Oh I’m just... going out with some friends.” He answered slowly.
“ By the docks?” The driver asked. “ Yeah, there is a hotel nearby and we’re staying there. I don’t know why they chose the docks. Maybe the view?” Marshall explained. A few minutes went by and the cab finally exited the tunnel and continued down the road and eventually made a right. The gigantic city was gone and in its place were 3 to 4 story buildings and small stores. Marshall looked up front to check the cars clock, 9:53. Marshall sucked his teeth quietly and lay back in his seat. The car made one final right turn at a street corner and to the right Marshall could make large, long, grey buildings that stretched out all the way down the road.
Beside the buildings were large parked 18 wheeler trucks lined together in single rows with various brand names on their trailers. The cab made a left and continued down the quiet road. Marshall looked out the window to see the dock and saw a medium sized boat by the dock. There was a black car and various other people on the dock and on the deck of the boat. The boat was overall grey but it had Bright red streaks running down the side of the hull.
“ Hey, right here is good.” Marshall quickly called out to the driver. The driver nodded and turned towards the side walk. Marshall quickly undid his seat belt and reached into his coat pocket for his wallet. “ The total is 10.79. You’re paying with cash?” The driver asked. Marshall didn’t respond and quickly handed the driver 15 dollars in cash. “ Keep the change,” Marshall told the driver and hastily exited the vehicle before he could say anything else.
Marshall closed the door behind him and swung his backpack on and quickly marched across the street. He picked up the speed and power walked towards the group by the boat. This caught the attention of two men standing by the boat. One of the men turned his head and shouted out something to the boat. Shortly after, a woman dressed in all black climbed out of the boat and walked down in the direction of Marshall, the two men following her closely. Marshall stopped when he heard the clicking of high heeled shoes hitting the ground. The woman looked to be in her 30’s, white and had black hair.
She had a completely black coat, pants, gloves and high heeled winter boots with white fur around the ankle. The two men beside her were both white and also wore a completely black attire. “ Are you lost?” Asked one of the men in a deep voice. “ N-No, I am looking for,” Marshall paused for a second so he could grab his phone. “ The Ven-Ate-Tours?” Marshall continued. The second man let out a small chuckle to himself at Marshalls attempt to pronounce the strange word. “ The Venators, Yes. Welcome Marshall, you are our last poacher.” The woman suddenly spoke up.
“ The other two have already arrived?” Marshall asked. “ As a matter of fact they did and on time.” The woman said with a slight tone. “ Traffic,” Marshall mumbled. The woman looked up and sighed. “ Well, it is New York. The rest of the preparations are complete.” The Woman turned and headed back towards the boat both Marshall and the men following her. “ How long will this trip be?” Marshall asked. “ I’ll explain everything in a few moments.” She responded quickly. The group made their way to the boat and stood in front of it.
On deck there were four other people on board the ship. Two younger white men who wore grey coats, a young white woman wearing almost the same thing and finally an old white man with a large white beard, black beanie hat and a dark green coat. “ Oh Captain Tomas, we have our last poacher.” The woman called out. The Old man turned around and looked down at Marshall. “ Well it’s about blasted time! I’m freezing out here! Amanda! Get the other two!” The old man snarled. The young woman quickly nodded and and rushed to the other side of the boat and disappeared down a hidden flight of stairs.
The group stood and waited patiently. A few moments later Amanda reappeared back on deck with two other men following her. One man was very tall, skinny, pale and had short black hair as well as a faint moustache on his upper lip. He wore a white coat and pants and black gloves. The second man was much shorter, rounder and seemed to be Italian. He was bald, had a grey coat and pants, black leather gloves and held his hat in his hands. Marshall squinted for a moment at the smaller man.
“ Harry?” Marshall asked. The short man smiled and climbed off the ship and on the dock and began to walk towards Marshall. Marshall started to laugh and shook the hand of the short man. “ How you doin, Marsh?” He asked. He had a thick New Yorker accent in his voice when he spoke. “ You did not tell me you were coming!” Marshall exclaimed excitedly. “ I didn’t know you were gonna be here. I would have told you otherwise.” Harry answered with a smile. “ Well it is good to see you anyways, my friend.” Marshall laughed and patted Harry on the back. The woman cleared her throat and straightened her posture.
“ Ahem, Gentlemen. Captain Tomas May I have the attention of you and your crew?” She asked. Captain Tomas folded his arms and whistled to his crew who all stopped and turned their attention towards the woman. “ Perfect!” The woman cried with a huge smile. “ Now as you already know, I have organized this hunting party to collect ivory from one of the large herbivores from Chimera island. You may have already been able to guess that the location you will be heading to is cold. Minus 23 to be exact.” The woman explained.
“ Jeez,” Blurted out the tall man. He spoke with a Scottish accent. “ We have taken the liberty of supplying you with extra clothing and rations to insure a safer journey. Use them sparingly!” The woman demanded. “ The plan is that Captain Tomas and his crew will escort you to The Grand Redwoods through a secret river system and make camp inside of the region. I then want my three lovely poachers Marshall, Harry and Miller to hunt and collect the tusk of the Gigacephalosaurus. I have left a sheet containing all the known creatures on the island so you know which is which.” The woman explained.
“ You lads will have my finest radios and GPS to navigate around the island as well weapons and traps.” Said Captain Tomas. “ Once your task is complete you will radio back to me and we’ll sail back home. It will take a day and a half to get there.” The Captain continued. “ You said we would be paid upfront. Where’s the money?” Harry asked with a bit of a snarl. The woman stopped and thought for a moment. “ But of course Harry. Gentlemen if you wouldn’t mind.” The two men in the Black suits both turned and walked to back of the black car and opened the trunk.
They then reached inside and grabbed three large suitcases and carried them back to the group. One of the men handed the woman a suit case and the three of them held them up and opened them in front of the group. Marshalls eyes widened when he saw inside the rows and rows of one hundred American dollar bills neatly stacked inside of the suitcases. Harry laughed and excitedly patted both Marshall and Miller on the back. “ There it is boys! Haha! I’m rich! I’m rich!” He cried with joy.
“ I can’t believe this.” Miller said silently to himself. “ One million American dollars here and one million American dollars when you return making a total of two million each.” The woman exclaimed. Marshall stood still, completely gobsmacked by the amount of money while Harry began stamping the ground and squealing like an excited child. “ But only if you return with the tusks!” The woman reminded them. “ Oh you’re getting those tusks! The tusks of every single Giga-cephal-whatever sore out there!” Miller cried out with joy. “ Excellent! Captain Tomas, I’ll trust you can take it from here?” The woman asked.
“ Of course Miss. Alright lads, we are leaving in ten. Get aboard, get settled because we have our headings to set sail.” Captain Tomas ordered. The trio of men were handed their suit cases and escorted aboard by the two crew men Harold and Buck. The woman and the two men beside her walked back towards their black car and climbed inside with the woman sitting in the back and the two men in front and drove off back towards the city.
After a while the boat had sailed a distance away from the ports making the massive city look more like a small candle in the distance. “ So, how do you two know each other?” Miller asked the other two. “ Harry and I used to hunt game back in Africa.” Marshall answered. “ That’s right. We’d hunt the biggest game Rhinos, Elephants, Hippos you name it!” Harry added. “ Really?” Miller asked them and the other two nodded. “ Ahem,” A older voice called out behind them. “ Oi Miller, I want you in your friends to call it a night in a few and use those blankets. It gets cold out here.” The Captain called out to them.
“ Yes sir.” Miller called back. “ The Captain seems to know you well Miller. You have history?” Marshall asked. “ That’s right. We used to work together a few years back.” Miller answered. The group slowly began to walk to the other side of the ship and towards the flight of stairs at the front of the boat. “ So what do the two of you plan to do with the money?” Marshall asked as they walked. “ That ain’t none of your business. My money’s my money. Why do you need to know?” Harry responded. “ We if you must know, I... l got a little gambling dept to deal with.” Miller answered.
“ And what about you, Captain nosey?” Miller asked Marshall. “ I’m going to use the money to fund my daughters education.” Marshall said proudly. Harry laughed out loud and glared Marshall. “ Oh please, you don’t got a daughter.” He said in a snarky manner. “ Yes I do. A lot can happen in 15 years.” Marshall replied. The group walked down a flight of stairs at the front of the boat and into a small storage room where they were supposed to sleep. “ Well, it’s about 11pm. I think it’s time for some shut eye.” Miller said to himself and walked to a corner in the storage room.
There were thick, furry, red blankets in large baskets as well as sleeping bags and pillows. Marshall walked over to the basket and grabbed a set of the items for himself. “Hey Marsh, come look at the weapons they are giving us.” Harry called out from behind him. Marshall looked around behind him and saw Harry holding a large rifle in his hands. “ I reckon that to be a Marlin 336. One of the best hunting rifles.” Miller answered. Harry turned the rifle around in his hands with a massive grin on his face. “You bet! With bad boys like these, earning the two million dollars will be a walk in the park.” Harry said happily.
