The Early Years of James:

Sir Topham Hatt travelled down to Liverpool to buy a mixed-traffic engine for his railway. When he got to the sales yard, he was in for a disappointment. He was late and every engine had been bought except for one.

"Ooh pick me Sir!" said a lonely 0-6-0 engine.

"No, I'm not looking for a goods engine. Without a pony truck, you can't go fast and pull passenger trains. But tell me about yourself."

"Well I was built as a Class 27 and I worked hard so they gave me a bigger firebox making me a Class 28."

"Would you be willing to get a pony truck making you a Class 29 2-6-0 so you can go faster and work hard for me?"

"Oh I will Sir. I won't let you down."

"Thats a good engine. I'll call you James."
