=EDIT= Changed her lower vest coating strap to blue. I just find that color match very appealing.
Done with Traditional Coloring Pencils in 1 hour and a half, then given minor enhancements with GIMP.
Just figured I'd give Ellie a slightly more fitting look, but according mostly to her personality and overall character.
Some of the new features are her blue top vest now reaches up to her upper arms. Under that blue vest is a matching white buttoned shirt with a short blue coating strap. Her jeans and belt are the same, though along with her bag, she also brings her father's pair of tool vests, one wrapped to each leg. And finally, she has her mother's winter scarf latched around her waist belt.

I think adding goggles either around her neck or above her head might help, it'll show that she's a technician and that she often wears them for protection while working.

Not a bad suggestion, but as far as inventor or engineer characters go, I feel the goggles around her neck or head are a bit too gimmicky and formulaic.

Formulaic, yes. Β Gimmicky... I don't see it as a way to garner attention, to be honest. I find them to be useful whether in underwater scenarios or in engineering work, they're a necessity.
Working with welding, it's a need as you don't blind yourself either from the intense light and heat from the welding tool itself, or sparks burning your retinas out.
And Ellie's face is too cute to cover up with a welding mask.
