Sadly, there aren't many forest like this left in the country. Hornbeam forest are very rare - in fact hornbeams are seldom seen in the wild, even if they are common in parks, gardens and hedges. Of all domestic trees they have the hardest wood. It was the traditional material for the making of cudgels. Today the cudgel industry isn't that important any more, which is probably for the common good.

After making your cudgel, don't forget to place it on the bottom of a dung-heap to mature over two years or so (according to ancient cudgel lore). Then it is ready to let the world dance to your beat!
