I'm sure the military could make a weapon that fulfills its basic function, what with the Airborne Laser and all, but it lacks that little aesthetic quality of seeing a bright bolt of light (or beam, as the case was prior to Nemesis)

Eh, maybe, but certainly not portable, at least not any time soon. The power source alone would be enormous... and you're right, it isn't a laser/phaser unless there's a kewl beam effect with it, oh, and an appropriate sound effect.

Yeah, oh well. I guess I'll just have to be satisfied with my First Contact Type 2 Phaser. At least that lights up and makes noises ^_^
