Description
I like to imagine Fausticorn as the "Queen" of Equestria, which would be why Celestia and Luna are princesses. My idea for this piece was that before Discord grew up, before Nightmare Moon, and before King Sombra, what was life like in the castle of the two sisters? Perhaps something like this - especially silly filly Luna.What's your headcanon regarding young Celestia and Luna? Who were their parents, and how did Equestria come to be the way it is in the show?

I seem to think of Lauren Fausticorn as a filmmaker who documents the ponies' adventures and somehow sends the tapes to us, hence G4 of MLP. But I have a feeling that fellow Deviant fyre-flye may know more about her than us.

My headcanon is that Celestia and Luna were raised by King Stellaris and Queen Gaea, but the family encountered a 5-6 year old Discord and adopted him. He and Celestia never grew as close as he and Luna, but they didn't hate each other. That's before things got shot to Hell.
A thousand years later after Discord reforms and reconciles with his sisters, it's revealed his biological mom (Fausticorn) was King Stellaris' older sister who traveled to what would later become Saddle Arabia and met her husband there. I don't want to give away what he was like just now. Then something happened that killed his dad and his mom tried to get back to her brother but died as well, (sickness/injuries/I haven't decided yet) and that's when Discord was found.
Even though Discord is technically their cousin, the Princesses will continue to think of him as their brother.

As I imagine it, they were nomads from a faraway place that stumbled over the recently-founded Equestria and found a home there.
Then Discord appeared and turned the orderly land into a chaotic kingdom, leading to his imprisoment and the start of dark times for the world, both in the immediate and the far future.

Well, I'd just like to say that Life in the Two Sisters Castle, would of been a luxury for the Family and Friends. It would just be a peaceful time before things get Darken and Dangerous, well, I can only imagine them being a Happy Family 'til their end.

What's with people imagining Discord as the younngest? In my mind, Discord would be the oldest of the three in this scenario. Though in my head-story he was born from the eternal void of chaos in a form physically older than the sisters, making him both physically and temporally older than the sisters by a large margin.
My head-story does hinge on having my god-OC in it, though, so it doesn't hold much weight outside fanworks.

I've actually got a series of comic strips going on my own page chronicling their early years as Equestria's rulers. "Tales of the Empyreal Sisters!"
Personally, I like to think of Celestia and Luna as the highest political pony power players. The only reason neither of them is "queen" is because there are two of them, and Celestia would never have said she had greater authority than her sister. After all, you can have several princesses, but only one queen. As for parents... I fantasize that it's an enduring mystery, a question left unanswered by Pony custom.
But if they had to have parents, instead of emerging from some primordial ether as I would prefer, I would say that they began as humble Earth ponies in a bygone, primitive time. "Paradise" is my favorite expression of this theory. Are you familiar? Great story.
It often bugs me when new characters are introduced who seem to be designed as "better" than the ones who we already had. Just look at Shining and Cadance's kid... ooh, she's a super-duper pureborn alicorn! Sheesh. And I often see art depicting Luna and Celestia's parents as awesome, uber-pony alicorn gods. I'd like for them to just stay the most impressive ponies around instead of turning out to be second best because new characters have to be "More" in some fashion.
Ah, but I'm ranting. Sorry. But you opened the door! I'm like the blood from The Shining, I'll just flood all over the place.

With Celestia, Luna, and Discord, I look back at Greek Mythology since the show tends to borrow a lot from Greek Mythology. A few days ago, I found an interesting quote from Latin author Gaius Julius Hyginus and his take on some titans from Greek pantheon:
"From Mist (Caligine) came Chaos. From Chaos and Mist, came Night (Nox), Day (Dies), Darkness (Erebus), and Ether (Aether)."
My headcanon on Celestia, Luna, and Discord are related in a way somehow be parallel to that of the Mist, Chaos, Night, Day, Darkness, and Ether. Celestia, Luna, and Discord may as well be Day, Night, and Chaos, now if only I can figure out the best parallels to Mist, Darkness, and Ether.
