No he didn't, which makes everything so much worse ;~;

Someone once mentioned a headcanon where he genuinely had grown to care for the hero, causing Dark Matter to actually struggle with its hold on him-- hence the more heartwarming moments and gestures such as that encouraging goodbye letter when you first leave Serene Village-- up until Entei's fall and the scene at Revelation Mountain, where it was strong enough to regain full control. I personally really like the idea, just because that parental relationship was so precious and I would hate to see it go to waste.
