Chapter 1- "The Beginning of The Nightmare"

(Sonic's POV)

'Something is wrong with Knuckles' I could tell, He wasn't acting like himself. It had a way of worrying me, which rarely happened. He didn't even seem to have his usual temper, which was quite alarming. I've been secretly watching him. He seems so lost.... The great guardian he once was seemed to crack into this fearful young echidna, who seemed confused.

(Knuckles' POV)

I am still feeling sick. Everyone is going to bed now, but... I really don't want to sleep. I know the same thing is only going to happen again. Zelkova's death replaying in my mind. I closed my eyes anyway, perhaps maybe, I can get peace for once.

Zelkova fell to the ground, his sheild and robotic armor began to fall apart off of his body. Revealing a giant plant man who had anger burning in his eyes. " I'll bring you all with me to the underworld!" Knuckles growled as Zelkova loomed over him. The echidna jumped forward, punching Yellow Zelkova in the face. The giant began to stumble backwards.Knuckles landed on the ground, watching Zelkova step backwards, right towards the lava.The cliff broke, Zelkova was now dangling over the lava pit. Knuckles' eyes widened as he realized what would come next. Zelkova began to slide down towards the burning liquid. His legs were submerged, Zelkova let out a horrified and painful screech. Knuckles ran closer, seeing this horrible thing happening. He just had to do somthing, and quick! Zelkova was now chest deep in lava, letting out choked screams and gurgles. Knuckles jumped down, desprate to save him, He slid down towards Zelkova, saving his own skin by digging a shovel claw right into the side of the cliff. "Give me your hand!" Knuckles ordered, he would not allow Zelkova to die. Zelkova reached, trying to take the echidna's hand so that he could be pulled to safty. But then, wordlessly, Zelkova stopped, his eyes blank, he smiled and pulled his hand away, then died, slowly sinking into the lava, staring his cloulded dead eyes at Knuckles, he was still smiling. Knuckles watched this in complete horror and devistation. Why!? Why would he do that. Knuckles shivered, as the lava boiled, his entire body felt sore and overheated. "ZELKOVAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!" Knuckles screeched this to the air. His entire body would not stop trembling.

I shot up in bed, shaking and sweating. 'When will this leave me alone! Why can't I FORGET THIS!!!' I was hyperventilating and shaking, unable to calm myself. I just got up, I can't sleep for the rest of the night and I know it. I can tell that I have not gotten a long sleep, perhaps only a half an hour of rest. I still feel so sick to my stomach.. and so guilty. I now headed to the engine room, in hopes that the sight of the Master Emerald would comfort me, it isn't like any of my friends will. I finally reached the engine room and stared at the great beautiful glowing gem. A calm feeling is overtaking me now... It was calming my mind and churning stomach. My heart rate is slowing, perhaps I can sleep here and now. But just now as I closed my eyes, Zelkova's gurgles and screaming filled my mind, I opened my eyes as my heart rate is now speeding up again, my stomach is feeling ill and upset again. 'What's happening to me?!'

I sat there and waited for morning to come, in space, it was hard to tell. I felt so tired and still so sick. I could now hear everyone talking in the main room. I got up, desprate to have company, so that I wont be here, alone with my thoughts. Tails was now checking the radar for nearby emeralds. I walked into the main room, I noticed Sonic staring at me, concern in his gaze. I wonder if he is noticing that I'm not well. Sonic leaned into Chris and spoke softly in his ear, they both glanced back at me. Cosmo watched me as well, I did say that I wasn't feeling well last night, so perhaps that was it. Cream had aproached me with a gentle smile, "Hi Knuckles, are you feeling better today?" 'Am I feeling better? Absolutely not!' I just stared at her, not sure how to answer that, my stomach is still violently churning, and my mind is still sluggishly processing her question. "Uh- I.." My stomach began to loudly and painfuly gurgle. I could feel my face grow hot as embarassment and nausea flooded through me. Everyone stared, "I- uh, not really.... No..." Cream frowned, "Oh... Well that's okay, I'm sure you'll feel better after we eat." What? Was she insane? Chris nodded in agreement, "That could be why you aren't feeling well, you didn't eat all day yesterday, the day before, or this morning. In fact, you haven't eaten since before Zelkova.... uh.. you know... So your stomach has to be hungry by now." That... was indeed true, I am hungry, and sick too... But they are still completly missing the point. I killed Zelkova. I don't deserve to have a full stomach after that. But The Master Emerald needed it's guardian, and I can't forget that. "You're probably right...."

While everyone was getting ready to eat, I stood in the hallway, staring at the wall, completly lost in thought, Suddenly, I sensed something behind me, I turned around, horror and fear now nagging in my already sick stomach. There, I saw Zelkova, completly burnt up to his chest, blood and organs spilling out of his rib cage, his eyes were glowing unnaturally, his face twisted into a cruel scornful smile, "You have killed me, you are a monster, a killer.... You will pay for what you have done to me.... I WILL make you SUFFER!"
