Description
More portfolio building, I really like the idea of modified weapons with some near-future tech. People are in too much of a rush to design whole new guns for wars set 20 years from now- I'm pretty sure we'll still be using what we have right now with new attachments.I had fun with this, lots of details to get lost in while I just played to music.

That concept is freaking amazing! Though I must say having a 4x zoom sight does not mike a standard rifle a sniper rifle. If it was a 10x, 20x, 30x, or 40x zoom, that is a totally different story. A 4x zoom just makes it a M14A4 with a slightly enhanced zoom. If you have--which I believe you have--looked down a 4x powered flip-to-the-side magnifier, you will realize 4x zoom is not that much. A 4x zoom really only helps with engaging targets (with a 5.56 by 45mm NATO) from 100 meters to 400 meters out. Wait...oh, you said "short-range sniper rifle". Nevermind, lol (friend of mine just pointed that out).
Enough with the criticism. I love this picture and concept! In my opinion, just make the zoom more powerful. By the way, is that large battery on the end needed? It seems like the rail the sights are resting on could house enough power for thousands of hours of use. Something that space could be used for would be a back pressure regulator or something. Look up the OSS BPR2 for more information on that. The benefit of having a BPR above the barrel is now you could save 6 or so inches for more suppressor room. The laser is pretty bomb, though putting a couple flash lights on it and an IR laser would be awesome! Hey, I'll design a PEQ box in Autodesk Inventor containing a regular and IR laser and flashlight that can fit on any picatinny rail. I could try to modify it so it would fit in the battery slot in this design if that is okay with you...?
Anyways, I LOVE THIS! Keep up the outstanding work!

Hey man, thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you liked it
Thanks for the info on the sight distance, Ill remember for next time! I haven't designed any guns in a about a year now so i might revise the idea at some point Thanks again!

That's nice, it reminds me of the concept art for the airburst-modded AKM from Elysium.

This piece was based off that design actually so well spotted, i like the ideas of future mods on aged weapons, its pretty accurate in what will likely happen one day.

im not sure lol, long enough i would hope? xD
Its not powering too much to be fair, just the sight flip and the standard lazor so it could last a few days at minimum like any other dot sight.

I was just wondering where the power source was?

the battery is labeled at the front of the rail with an outlet which the soldier would carry, standard AC charger.

I would of thought the power source would be a small battery cell that is removable like most modern day optics.

TheEnderling In reply to Bowman74 [2015-01-15 03:51:20 +0000 UTC]
it is removable
A rechargeable battery that can be removed would make more sense.

I may be nit picking but the sight is kind of high above the barrel.

Nitpicking indeed lol, not that I mind. To answer your thoughts; go look at a Famas with a sight on it and you`ll see why that doesn`t make a difference: weaponsystems.net/image/s-ligh…
The user would simply adjust the sight as they would every other gun in history.

Another question I have is why did you choose the M16A4 over the M4/M4A1?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TheEnderling In reply to Bowman74 [2015-01-15 07:03:32 +0000 UTC]
Because the A4 is three generations newer and its the standard issue rifle for the UMC mainly, but its really down to modding a weapon which has high units in circulation; the A4 is reported to be a better weapon too.

That's a lot of bulk for a laser sight and variable zoom scope. before I read the text I'd have figured you were showing off a laser rifle conversion that mounts on the M16 lower.

I've seen those bipod foregrips, and had one on my rifle for a while. The only thing I can say is that MOST of what you have mounted here can already be accomplished on an M16. Mount a 1-4x scope with illuminated reticle in the first focal plane on a QD base with a flip-up rear sight for backup with the standard front sight gas block or a low profile gas block with flip up front sight backup, and a laser capable of illuminating in the near infrared to be visible to NVGs If you want you can put that and an electronics package for ballistics/shots remaining in the same housing with the scope.
If you wanna get really fancy, do what Sig did and use a gas piston/operating rod combo so that the operating group doesn't extend clear to the buttplate and now you can mount a folding stock instead of just an adjustable stock.
and if you wanna get really, really fancy, mount a hundred round surefire coffin mag.

No offence, but I have literally no idea about that stuff.
This is all conceptual for aesthetic purposes in a semi-realistic setting, it shouldn't be taken too seriously
I know most of the tech here is already in use in some form or another, but I wanted to add a more streamline version instead of manually adjusting scopes and physically moving them.
The way I think about these concepts is how they would look in a game or a movie, the sights flicking up on the fly etc, it would look cool I think.
Thanks for viewing and commenting though

My idea of near future would also have belt fed guns from 500 round box magazines that fire semi-auto to minimise frequency of reloading.
Great texturing and attention to detail.

KahunaSniper In reply to SoFDMC [2014-08-20 18:52:12 +0000 UTC]
The point of a belt-fed is volume of fire laid down; which is why they are full-auto. Semi-automatic fire in a belt-fed package is redundant.

Its already been done on the M240 SLR by Ohio Ordinance Works. New closed-bolt design, but still feeding from the belt with smaller grouping on target.

I'm well aware of OOW's work, my friend. But, it's the point of a belt-fed machine gun that takes precedence.

I've fired the M16, and found its recoil quite mild. It doesn't really need that shock absorber.

TomyIronmane In reply to Phaedeaux [2014-12-06 05:14:18 +0000 UTC]
It's already GOT one, in the form of the buffer tube, buffer, and recoil spring. Downside is you can't mount folding stocks to them.
