Here’s a semi more recent drawing for yadrawn Dec 31st - Jan 3rd-ish
This is actually the very first piece I drew upon receiving my IPad,
It just felt appropriate to break it in with these dorks, seeing as they played a decently large part in my progression over the years art wise, in addition to being a main source motivation for me aswell ^^ I’ve invested a lot of time and thought into them although I haven’t posted as much of that as I’d liked to, anyone who’s been here long enough though knows my DA timeline is a wild ride with a lot of downhill spiralsX’D
but I am slowly getting back on track (ironically while I’m arguably at my busiest)so here’s to hoping I can change that.
Wanted to do a kind of throwback pic with these two, been awhile since I’ve done or posted something focusing on just them and their? I guess unusual dynamic. It was fun, maybe even a little hint nostalgic feeling..? Which seems bizarre to say cause to me it still feels like 2014 was like ehh three years ago, not practically six, kind of jarring how fast the time went, I feel old y’all X’’) rip. but anywho-
As a “throwback” for anyone who may not be familiar with these characters (which is easily a lot, I’m terrible at putting out content on my OCs :’’D) I’m referring to the?? I guess surface vibe of their dynamic, it’s something I haven’t touched on or just given a real nod to in a post in some time,
so as a little synopsis-
Kiome is this big buff kid who reins the backstreets of sanfran, very much a tomboy, very much a hot head when provoked but ironically has a lot of anxiety issues, including very prominent social anxiety. her off putting and intimidating demeanor repels most people (understandably so) as she has a lot of walls built up from taxing experiences she’s had- but that’s context for another day XP
All you really need to know is she’s not a people person and tends to scare her peers whether she really means to or not at this point.
she’s really only got a gentle touch for animals, finds their company far easier to be in and is very in-tune with their behavior.
her positive social experiences are very much limited to-
Hiro, this noodle limbed, wildly intellectually gifted child prodigy, who while he is certifiably a genius, lacks a certain degree of common sense and maturity. (all which I’m sure you probably already know if you’ve seen the film XP) he’s a real sassy kid, borderlining on cocky but knows when to swallow his pride- I could probably go on forever for how much I’ve analyzed and studied this character over the years pff sAd I know but this movie hit home alright?
but anywho, He manages the feat of befriending the big weirdo, being her first and only friend mind you. And for that she holds him very close, sometimes somewhat literally X’D she is not a hugger nor a touchy feely person by any means but she likes to use her brawn and Hiro makes himself an easy and fun subject to do so with, one because he’s literally a toothpick and his weight is nothing for her to lift and toss around, and two because -while neither of them have any interest in romance because- well duh they’re literally kids and have much better things to worry about X’D
Hiro’s innocence proceeds him and Kiome’s strange ‘brodude’ mannerisms fluster the kid, a lot.
Which Kiome does notice, and understand to a certain extent but she’s also a jerk and just likes to mess with him, his reactions are too fun to pass up more often than not.
that being said, she’s also very careful with and protective of her smol guy friend and will not hesitate to curb stomp you in his defense.
Really they’re just a couple of sassy teenagers who challenge each other and call each other out on their weirdness but ultimately have each other’s back no matter what.

Probably useless information but hey, I’m just trying to get myself in the swing of actually posting content on my creations cause I’ve poured literally way more time than anyone ever should into them and I gotta put it out there. X’D

another thing that may not be clear- Kio is addicted to loves soda, Hiro loves gummy bears, I represent Kio with blue, Hiro with red, hence the all that nonesense in the background XP

This Lady might as well be an elevator, because she sure does seem like she can lift some spirits. And also some friends, that's very important.
I really liked seeing your description of how much these two mean to you. Becoming attached to a character like this can be very nice, especially if they inspire and motivate you to keep going just because you like them so much.
That type of relationship between an artist and the characters they draw can be extremely sweet to see, and it makes me oddly happy that you enjoy working with this pair so much. x3
Kio's story is a bit of a tragic one, it's a bit saddening that she has gone through so many nameless hardships, but it's also kind of inspiring that she's managed to stay strong after everything she's gone through, despite the fact that it made her become way more reserved and antisocial; that's just a part of real trauma.
She is a very good example of a "hard shell with a soft core", which is kinda sweet to see.
Hiro, on the other hand, is just a lovely fella, I'm pretty sure I don't need to point out everything great about the little noodle.
Seeing as he helps Kio become a bit more outgoing and friendly is an absolutely heartwarming thing. He probably had some issues getting through to her at first, but that's just what building trust up is all about.
I feel like you saying that all of the backstory is useless information is plain wrong, there are a lot of people (myself included), that like to have a bit of story behind a picture. It really adds a lot of very nice depth to a scene that could be boiled down to "They're cute together" otherwise.
I also must say; platonic love is something I personally think to be highly underrated, so it's very nice to see it used in this case.
Ahem... When it comes to the picture, you did a very good work with the composition.
I really like the way you pictured their body types and the expressions on their faces. It gives a really good idea of what their relationship is like without actually relying on the bit of story they have.
The poses are really good, too. I absolutely love how tall and cute Kio manages to be.
Looking at the background is rather trippy in the best way imaginable. I feel like you nailed the glithy look of the colors behind them without driving attention away from the subjects on the foreground.
The random paint splatters and the rugged screen look of the neon lights, along with the way they all blend together is surprisingly pleasing to see.
You did a delightful work!

Aw goodness, I don’t know what I did to gain your attention or how you found me exactly but I feel super lucky and grateful you not only did but that you also enjoy my content enough to take the time to tell me.
I’ve been on this site for years and I’ve never really gotten such descriptively kindhearted comments like yours, like gosh I never imagined me talking about how much I enjoy working with some particular characters would make somebody else happy, that’s so wild to me but in a very encouraging way! It’s really nice to hear. ;w;
ahh thank you! I poured a lot into making her a believable and grounded character, fortunate and unfortunate experiences and all, so it means a lot to hear that gets across from just the little snippet I put out here.
and yeah, her ”softness” even then is very selective as she doesn’t get close to anybody easily. XP
but indeed if you do get close to her she’s very loyal and will protect ya with her life.
He’s an awesome character for sure.

But like you said trust building definitely takes pushing through and understanding each other’s issues.
that means so much more to me than I could probably put into words so I’ll just say- I appreciate that immensely and will definitely keep that in my mind next time I start to write.
I’m admittedly a very self-critical and self deprecating person ;v; and that coupled with the usual lack of traffic my artwork gets just sort of leads me to believe I’m of writing for no one but myself. Which isn’t a bad thing by any means! I enjoy writing and drawing for myself but it does leave me feeling a bit silly when it comes to posting it, as I feel it’s most likely no one really cares enough to read what I write. But I thank you very much for expressing otherwise! It really surprised and made me smile.

As a bit of an explanation to that; I only recently started being a bit more outgoing here. I'm trying to be a bit nicer to the people I follow and showing some appreciation for all the work they put into their pictures.
Funny enough, finding you was partly thanks to that, since the existence of your page was only brought to my attention after I left a comment on one of the pictures Tonic did with your character: www.deviantart.com/comments/1/…
I've always said that reaching out to the people who will genuinely enjoy what you do is mostly just a matter of luck. From what I've seen so far, your gallery is full of lots of very lovely characters and fun scenes, so attempting to show some appreciation for the pictures you make and the characters you've created, along with their backstories, is the least I can do.
I really do love seeing characters with depth being placed in silly scenes like these!
Kio is a pretty solid character, and that's saying a lot for someone I've only seen one picture of; just the fact that she has real issues and fun traits make her feel like a real person that is really nice to have around.
I feel like that's a fair assumption, granted you haven't gotten many people who come up and actually put thought into their words. I just try to be a bit more constructive, because I know how nice it can be to receive a little comment mentioning how nice some details in your picture look.
Sure, that makes these take a bit long to write, but just seeing your reaction to each of the little notions I write makes putting these comments out that much more worth it.
I do think you're a very underrated artist. I really wish you got some more attention, which you're very much deserving of.

ahh that’s really true! The online artist community and just DA by itself is so vast but at the same time if you’re not on top of pushing your work out into the bigger communities, getting involved in groups and keeping up a presence, people tend to not really pay attention. It can be a little discouraging at times because I really don’t have the time to dedicate to all that, in addition to me just being a bit too shy to be so loud with my online presence ^^” so for mostly casual artists like myself it really is a matter of luck finding the people who’ll click with and enjoy the content you’re putting out, like you said.
and gosh you say the kindest things! It really does make me happy and inspired to have someone invested in the silly things I create. And I agree! I love action centric characters being put in mundane and casual or funny settings, it’s just fun to see!

its extraordinarily nice! People underestimate the value of their words when it comes to creators but really, even if sometimes not everybody responds to said messages, I know how much it can mean to read a real descriptive reaction someone had to your creation, it’s super motivating, both positive and critical comments!

Haha why not? Same here!! I love breaking gender rolls and stereotypes people have for how boys and girls “should” behave and look in a relationship.
It’s much more fun and interesting in my personal opinion, regular vanilla couples are great and cute of course, I don’t want to bash them or anything but there are plenty of them. ^^
meanwhile duos like this are harder to come by.
