Description
60 Minute speedpaint for the next speedpaint challege. This one is themed 'Scavenger.' So here I have a junkyard with two people scavengingWas thinking of doing a character or creature concept, like a sweet looking vulture or something, but ended up doing a couple of people scavenging in a junkyard. Doesn't look too clean there.

This is such a beautiful piece of art! Even if it's a speedpaint picture, I like the way you used the colours and the oriental structure of the image... It makes me feel like I'm in a wide place! I wish I had your skills, I'm still learning how to speedpaint. Great job.

Thanks! I'm working on developing a better sense of movement and atmosphere in my work
I have a tutorial (kinda outdated) in my gallery. You could check that out. Might help some.

I'm not trying to be too critical, but as an aspiring painter this is some of what I noticed.
It's a lovely speedpaint. There are a few paired/repeated shapes in it though, and I think that might be wrecking the haphazard look of the huge piles of junk. Also, the midground pillar on the right has a very sharp, straight edge, dissimilar to the rest of the scene, not bad necessarily, but it's a compositional element that hasn't been fully utilized (ie. not to maximum effect). And it's a completely made-up world, so why wouldn't you include only things that add to the composition? You can ALWAYS go back later and paint in the little imperfections that give realism.
The figures are very dark. Travel photography may show how people reflect their surroundings. A scene like this, I would rely on human instinct and composition to draw eyes to a figure. You've used heavy contrast. Which is fine, but whatever.

Yeah, I know what you mean. That pillar on the right could be a little more jagged so it's more like trash or something, it kinda slipped my mind I guess as to why it's so straight. Thanks for pointing that out!
And the silhouettes of the people were a little lighter like they should be, but I went and changed them to be darker. I wanted people to really notice them.
All in all, it'd look a lot better if I had over an hours time to do it. I'm still learning to more detail in less time

Yeah you don't use textures and such, huh? It's gonna make you an incredible painter if you can get aethetically pleasing detail with the relatively plain shapes you appear to be using. I encourage that.
I've only just begun using textures in my work and the process does inspire possibilities that I'd ignore otherwise. I recommend it. 1x.com has loads of landscape photography (and other kinds), maybe give it a shot when you see yourself losing hope in a painting. It's quick too, good for speedies.
You're much better than me, btw. I just figure maybe you want lengthy and potentially useful comments on paintings every now and then. Feel free to ignore.

I use textures rarely. Only for paintings I spend more time on I guess. I usually get them all from cgtextures.
I'll be sure to check out that 1x.com place. Sounds like something I could benefit from. Thanks
And you're right! I do like thought out responses here and there instead of the generic 'Nice painting! ^_______^'
Stop by again soon!

It's like tents. I tried other colors, orange just seemed to work
It just needed some more prominent props in it.

Haha, kinda. Maybe the scavengers hide from the shade under them? While they're looking at whatever they found? I dunno, lol.

Thanks! The only thing that bothers me is the people don't look like people at a first glance :/
