Well, it would've made the Enterprise / Constitution class obsolete overnight.

As we never see the class after the 2290s, it would have only hastened the inevitable?

Dont get me wrong- I love the Enterprise/Refit connie class, but what conclusions can you draw from their absence after Star trek 6?

Not only did they stop their pursuers in this scene, Scotty also got his chance to prove a very important point about the Excelsior. Bet there were a lot of embarrassed ship designers and engineers later that had to be called in so to...discuss things...with the powers that be after this.

Seems once Mr. Scott sabotaged the Excelsior they could not figure out what he did as they never could 'fix it'.Β  LOL.Β  She was supposed to have transwarp drive, which is like one step below Slipstream.Β  Scotty set Starfleet Engineering back by at least two decades with whatever he did to the ship.Β  Can you imagine... We know he did something to her but we can't figure out WHAT?!Β  Oh, well, no more dreams of transwarp.Β  Let's just get her up to the same speed as the Constitution class ships and then make one of them to be named ENTERPRISE "B".Β  Was Scotty the only Engineer Starfleet had that could do anything technical?!

I like the points you make here.Β  What irks me is they often say the Excelsior was a failure for not being able to achieve transwarp but the ships of that class were considered some of the best places to to serve in Starfleet aboard up until and including the late 2370's.Β  Some claim the "C" era with the Ambassador ships were an even bigger failure as they had poor combat ratings in conventional space.Β  The Excelsior ships were still relevant after almost 80 years of service.Β  The Connies served a long time but Excelsior ships were the standard for over 8 decades and that is impressive.Β  Heck, even a refit Excelsior class took on the DEFIANT in that two part episode at Earth.Β  the Lakota vs. The Defiant and they were almost evenly matched.Β  Granted, the Lakota had been retrofitted something fierce, which not all Excelsior ships had been.Β  But it shows their spaceframes were still remarkable and significant after over 8 decades in service.

There was a newer fan designed ship called the DAWNSTAR (class) that took the main part of the Ambassador spaceframe and built a completely new design of ship based upon that old spaceframe.Β  They used the framework BUT started from scratch on the rest.Β  It was built as a multipurpose ship with one of its primary functions being a heavy battlecruiser.Β  This is pretty much what the TOS Enterprise was classified as despite the whole five year mission of exploration.Β  The DAWNSTAR looks like an older ship that could be from the same time as the Galaxy class but she is more advanced than the Galaxy class and maybe about equal in capabilities as the Titan class ships of the later 24th Century.Β  She may look older but she is fitted with the latest tech and the ships needs less crew to operate at optimum function.Β Β

Technically, the ENTERPRISE 1701 from TOS was classified as a "Heavy Multi-purpose Armed Cruiser".Β  In ST III the Klingons refer to the 1701 as Federation Battlecruiser.Β  So maybe its just the Klingons who label it as that but it listed it in an old collector's magazine I had back then as a 'Heavy Battle Cruiser'.Β  Β The director of 'ST II: The Wrath of Khan' was obsessed with the more military aspects of Starfleet than the exploration side and this shows with the opening Kobyashi Maru simulation.Β  Nicholas Meyer directed ST II and he also directed ST 6: The Undiscovered Country and his influence is seen in both ST II and ST 6 as embracing a more utilitarian and military aspect of how he thought the ships should be.Β  the one common element all the would be labels have is that they agree the Connies are a form of "Cruiser".Β  The RELIANT from ST II also had many listings on official merchandise but they all agree that RELIANT was a MIRANDA-class Frigate.Β  Why one is a cruiser and one is a frigate is just there to differentiate between the two famous ships.Β Β

Does anybody remember in Star Trek VI, the Excelsior with Sulu in command is clearly missing Transwarp drive. Because remember the part when theΒ ExcelsiorΒ is racing to Khitomer at maximum warp.Β helmsman Lojur warnsΒ "She'll fly apart,"Β andΒ Β Sulu exclaimsΒ Β "Fly her apart then!".Β  Either that was sloppy writing on the part of the writers and/or there was a Starfleet Command decision to axe Transwarp?Β Β Β Β

I always thought that the cartoon engine splutter wasn't made by the engines at all - it was Scotty rigging the ship's PA system to play those sounds as a "fuck you" to that bucket of bolts.
