Wow. You certainly captured the moment well.Β

Personally, I'm old guard and find DIS well - quirky, but quite nice to watch. At least its not JarJar Abrams abomination or Disney Wars.Β Β

Agreed!

The problem is that they just coudln't sell the old concept for a sixth time: encountering a human social issue analog and solving the issue in 45 minutes. Today's storytelling requires in-depth character development and overarching storylines.

Well maybe sometimes, but I will argue that today movies or series have to dazzle with violence/gore, explosions and nudity. Preferably all three at same time with no plot whatsoever.Β

I'm very particular what I watch which isn't much, one series in ~10 years, DIS after SG Atlantis finished. And any series reaching Babylon 5 level. Sorry I won't live long enough to witness this.Β Β

Gotta be honest with you: Classic Trek was filled with violence and sex, just toned down for the audience of the day. Remember how many Redshirts died horrible deaths and how Kirk sediced all the hot alien babes. Back then, it was all the same.

ThessianCG In reply to thefirstfleet [2019-02-17 17:23:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes sure I remember. I find violence abhorrent, as such I need really good plot or exceptional cast to follow.Β

I always laughed when watching episode with some away team, saying: 'oh this guy/gal and him/her and him/her, they never coming back'. And they never did, plots are so easy to predict in Trek.Β Β

Rule of thumbs (both) in Trek, 'never be on away team/bridge if you're not main cast'. It's not a rocket science people.Β  Β

Sorry mate, you're work is top notch as usual... it's just I can't bite my tongue any longer.Β  I'm not even watching the season, but all the reviews confirm that I'll be bored out of me skull, boiling mad and dry-retching until Christmas, like last year with the eating Saru's alien man parts, come on... that's like disturbed human centipede kinda crap going on and now a severed baby head shown on screen, any other show would get cancelled for something like that, YouTube would pull any video that showed that kind of graditutious gore, but CBS/Alex Kurtzman can get away with it because what?Β  They can't figure out how to fake a death with some blood on a baby blanket... so incompetance then.

Sigh... I don't mean to rant on your image, you're doing the fan thing.Β  I just want my Star Trek back. Β Β  I want the content to resemble the brand again.

Please watch this week's episode. It made me shed a manly tear. It was Star Trek in its purest form. No Game of Thrones style bullshit, just pure sci-fi adventure.

celticarchie In reply to thefirstfleet [2019-02-12 17:53:00 +0000 UTC]

Okay, this got away from me so I just want to preface, I totally love your artwork and how you produce the entire spectrum of Star Trek, if your inspired by discovery that's great.Β  I just find the show to be a deception and I'm trying to give my reasons for that.

If it was just some minor details they they were screwing up, but it's not... it's everything!Β  The plots have been incoherent from the start and so boring that most of them just make me fall asleep or zone out, even if they do stumble upon something 'interesting' I've still got to sit through that awful Micheal Burnham, with her head so firmly shoved up her own arse.Β  She is such a contrieved character, shoe-horned into the lore, but in doing so they have to comepletely change the character of Sarek into this almost Dr Mengele/Frankenstein type of person and by extension turn the entire Vulcan race into racist bastards.

On top of that Burnham is a bully, she actively bullies Saru in the first episode.Β  I just saw a clip where Lorca asks Saru his opinion of her, he hestitates and looks at her then says she's the best officer ever, but that look is one I recognise, it is that of an abuse victim knowing they have to cover for their abuser otherwise they are going to get it ten times worse later.Β  Further more on the character of Saru, his short origin story thing, completely contradicted everything we learned about him in the first season.Β  Those gangila things that are supposed to warn him about danger and death, how the hell is that supposed to evolve in a species that just walks willingly to their deaths.Β  People moan about the 'canon violations', but I don't get near them because I can't get past the violations to basic common sense.

There is also the hypocrisy of discovery, 'hey we're so progressive, we have a gay couple on our show', hang on, you just killed one of them off in one of the most homophobic tropes ever!Β  'yay we federation for peace, exploration and the love of puppies... go Klingnot war, mutually assured distruction for the Klingnots'.

Then there's the legal issues. Discovery is made under the same license that the 2009 reboot movie.Β  The term 'Prime' and/or 'Prime Universe' does not mean TOS, TAS, MOV, TNG, DS9, VOY or ENT, it means JJ Abrams/Alex Kurtzman's version of it.Β  In order for Bad Robot/Secret Hideout to make merchendise on reboot/discovery, the designs cannot be exact replicas of the TOS designs, because all the money from that merchendise would go to CBS as the copyright owner of Star Trek.Β  Back in 2009 JJ Abrams wanted them to switch completely over to reboot merchendise, so from 2009 onwards no merchendise featuring the likenesses of the original actors, ships, uniforms, props could be produced and CBS flat out refused because that brought in 1 billion dollars in revenue a year.Β  Remember Paramount wanted JJ to make another Star Trek movie for release in late 2010, early 2011, but Into Darkness doesn't come out until 2013, neither does it 'hit' either.Β  Unable to get his own way JJ Abrams runs off to ruin Star Wars.Β  This also brings a whole new light onto the Axanar lawsuit and the fanfilm cull, Bad Robot can't make money of reboot merchendise because no one wants it, but fans still flock to the fanfilms.Β  One film gets funding in a record number of donations, their 'trailer' is essentially a movie in itself and if Bad Robot's finacial backers get wind that (good) Star Trek can be made at a fraction of the cost it takes to make reboot Star Trek... hence fanfilms have to die because the reboot cannot compete and CBS has to 'save face' because the original 'rules' for fanfilms were founded under the companies previous admistration.

With discovery the problem is that it and the reboot movies before it are just damaging the brand of Star Trek, it's made for a ridiculous amount of money, not pulling in viewers and turning investors away from funding Star Trek, discovery got seaon 1 funded by Netflix, but not season 2.Β  Netflix didn't get what they paid for and it shows in their actions, CBS spent 5 million on the short trek episodes, Netflix wouldn't buy them CBS ended up giving them away.Β  Everytime CBS promotes the show, it's hit back with serious negative feedback, first episode of season 2 on YouTube for free to viewers in the US, with comments open flooded with negative reviews.Β  The Picard Parody is just desperation at this point, because it was dependant on discovery season 2 being a hit... which it really isn't.

Listen, I know you don't like Discovery, and I understand your reasons. But stop posting this stuff over my DSC renders. I get it, now move on. I too am not 100% satisfied with Discovery, but at least I'm not biased to not see the improvement it's having in S2. Let's face it: it's a 50-years old franchize that's been milked to death multiple times. It needs to find itself again. TNG's first three seasons are on par with "Spock's Brain" and "And the children shall lead" material, but even that series started to develop later on. Personally, I could never really get into TNG because of how it started, and despite recognizing its milestone value, I still consider it the weakest entry in Trek. But I do lots of TNG stuff, because I like it nonetheless, and I won't go commenting the true or percieved flaws of the series on other people's renders.

Just for once I'd like for someone to defend discovery base on it's own merits, a well written scene, a believeable character, a unique look at the lore of Star Trek, but no.Β  They just bring out the Spock's Brain and early TNG nonsense and it just doesn't hold water.Β  Yeah, I'm being an arse, those are my reasons for being so... you know what, I'm not going to comment on your art again, you can block me, I'll just fave what I like and ignore what I don't.
