A favorite episode. Β So cool to see alternate shots that could not have been made back in the day.

Wow, you even got the dangly bit on the bottom of the lower dome. Not everyone seems to know about it and it is hard to find pictures showing it clearly.
I love the layout of this scene.

Hey, up until this, Starfleet didn't even KNOW how to time travel, really. DTI wouldn't even have jobs if not for this incident!

Maybe, with the altered time lines created by the event they might not know it was a problem to be corrected.

Great render, one of my favorite episodes. Can you imagine had the Enterprise had been shot down, how would it have changed the future. Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, the Vietnam was only four years old and King was leading freedom marches. How would the government treat the survivors of the Enterprise. If the ship came down in a populated area they could never hide the truth, how the Soviet Union would have responded. A captured alien space ship could have started the third world war. Boy talk about alternate time line reality.

Β Not that the I believe that the U.S. Air Force could shoot down a Constitution class, at least not unless they had technology captured from the ship that crashed at Roswell, but that would be going down a rabbit hole.
Β Though if they shot enough nukes, and they hit, they could conceivably down the Enterprise. Of course, a M/AM equipped starship falling onto any populated area would be an unmitigated disaster. And wouldn't overloading the reactor to destroy the ship, even if possible, create not only a large explosion, but possibly radiation as well?
Β That seems to be something that hasn't been explored very much.

I think Kirk would have slef-destructed the Enterprise, along with the crew, to prevent contamination.

Ah, would he have time, the routine to βSelf-Destructβ required three officers to authorize it, there may be a quick hit button that the captain can use, but with the ship damaged and tumbling out of the sky, it might not be possible, and were the ship falling on a populated area, the captain would try to avoid impact there and crash it elsewhere. Β Still a core breach would destroy more than just the Enterprise if it impacted with the earth. Automatic systems might eject the core before going critical, hitting the earth at a different location leaving wreckage of the Enterprise available for examination, and the core detonation might be interpreted as an attack by these invaders.

The Enterprise is the best UFO. Until I'm assured otherwise, I'm just going to say that all UFOs ever are the Enterprise and Scotty just really needs to get that glitchy time machine prototype uninstalled.
Other people have said this, but this is an incredibly lovely camera angle and fantastically detailed. Really does the scene justice. I just want to sit here and look at it...

HA! You can say that twice! Here in Germany we call them "Flying Coffins" or "Widowmakers". We also got a good joke about it: Whats the quickest and cheapest way to get a Starfighter? You buy a piece of land and wait for a Starfighter to crash there.

Beautiful shot!
I love this composition -- you've got the Enterprise at a great angle, coming right at the viewer, with the port nacelle bussard just visible as a red highlight behind the saucer giving the image depth.
And while you've got the ship filling the right side of the picture, you've used the sweep of the saucer's curve to frame part of the sky, and draw the viewer to the F-104.
Too bad they couldn't have had a shot like this in the original episode!
