Description
Finally scanned this. It's a bit faded now though. I was TAing a sophomore drawing class...The students were griping about an assignment where they had to do some reference sketching and then composite the sketches into a fantastical perspective drawing. So I decided to do the assignment alongside 'em.

Do you have any tricks for not accidenyally smudging with the side of your hamd as you draw? I do pencil art mainly but with most paper it's hard for me not to smudge as I draw

Aside from starting (as a righty) in the top left and working my way towards the bottom right... Hmm.
I tend to work on my drawing from all angles, flipping it 180 or 90 degrees as necessary. Also occasionally, I'll use a piece of non smudgy paper underneath my hand.
But mostly just keeping everything light to begin with while mapping it out and then doing the left to right, top to bottom, when I hit the "render" phase.

Hey, wow! This is great! Can I ask what techniques were used in this? Where is the vanishing point, etc.
And, would you mind if I possibly re-drew this in the future? I should give drawing a full building scene a try...

I would suggest you try making up your own architectural space! The point is to resolve the perspective challenges faced as you create the space. If you just copy this you wouldn't be doing any of that.
The horizons line is at the top of the drawing and it's based on a 3 point perspective setup (2 on the horizon line and one vertical).
Hope that helps!

what do you mean by "resolve the perspective challenges faced"?

Trying to think of an analogy... how's this:
If you were interested in learning how to translate French, would you just copy an essay I had already translated into English? The learning takes place in doing the translation yourself. You don't even have the original French copy here to compare.
Back to the actual drawing:
I've already made all of the decisions, figured out the answers. All you would be doing is xeroxing.
It's the reason that most art schools/teachers don't want you working from photographs when you are first learning. The camera makes all of the decisions for you, you don't have to learn how to see.

I love how you have the sketchpad in the drawing as well. Did you take a picture of this place before you drew it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TheFool432 In reply to XNebiX [2010-03-23 01:10:06 +0000 UTC]
Nope. The idea behind the assignment was to create a fictional space out of a composite of real spaces within the building. Actually as you can see on the drawing of the sketchpad, I took visual notes while there in person. Then I constructed this image from those notes while adding a few fantastical tweaks.

and students were really gripe about this assignment? our perspective assignment, which we're doing now, is 10 times harder than this! they don't know how lucky they are

I would say it's not a matter of how hard the assignment is but more of how well it's completed heh.

Oh wow. That is amazing. It's so freaking complicated! So, I've asked other people this, and no one will tell me the secret. When the vanishing points are off the actual drawing page, how do you deal with that? Any tips. I'm trying to get more into doing backgrounds and learning perspective. . .yay rulers!

SandFire1on1 In reply to AnnaCStansfield [2009-05-26 18:41:47 +0000 UTC]
For me, its a lot of guessing and background experience. Much like how most artists just 'know' how to draw their characters. You still make attempts to apply basic techniques, but a lot of it comes from your background.

I think it's important to learn the basic rules and then learn from experience and observation when they don't apply heh.
Unless you have a crazy-awesome spatial sense, winging it will lead you to problems if you're doing anything more than a simplistic drawing.
I was just reviewing student portfolios at the National Portfolio Day and I'd say that the best advice I can give is when doing a perspective drawing, don't forget to take a step back and look at the whole and see whether it makes sense. Apply your common sense, ie. Well the height of that building is increasing as it gets further into the distance and looking down the street outside my house I can clearly see that things get smaller as they get further away so I messed something up...

How much sketching of particular elements did you have to go through... I see the sketch book and of course no one can do something like this without practice and planning ^_^ unless you are like super awesome toast man....
Again, great job, I just noticed how there is a border of white and then the column on the top keeps going past the border that is nifty!

I had about 4 pages of quick pen sketches. Spent a couple hours wandering around the State Capitol building here in RI, although most of the time I spent there I was wandering from student to student checking in, giving advice, etc.
Yeah, the border thing was one of those happy mistakes. I wasn't paying attention and extended that main column through the border. Realized it after the fact, but liked how it looked and left it.

About how many perspective points did you use to make everything as awesome as it is? (I know that there were 3 just to make the whole view but include the notebook and boat and stuff)
I tried creating something similar and almost every time I did so, the perspective near the bottom of the page seemed like an extreme... is that supposed to happen due to the angle of the viewing? (I had 1pp really far away and the other two closer to each other.....)
Well, thank you for entertaining meh...
Keep up the great work!
