Description
16 x 22Gouache paints with coloured pencil on watercolour paper
*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all of my Potter art work building up (hopefully) to having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***
It's not an insanely dramatic scene, but I enjoy it very much. It involves Hagrid, so I was a happy illustrator, but I was pleased with the mood and just how it turned out.Β
Fun Fact: This was the first scene I just absolutely had in my mind to illustrate. I didn't start reading the books till well after the movies had started running, so I was already familiar with how the films interpreted the scene. But when I finally read the books, this was the first one I saw in my minds eye as this illustration. And I had started to consider doing this painting by itself before I ever decided to illustrate the whole series... but when I did decide to to that, this scene got put on a back-burner till it came up. Luckily I didn't have to wait too long!

awesome!!!! I love all the details, like the pattern on the couch, the empty bag of crisps, the books under the couch,...

Thanks! I think it's the details that help bring a painting to life

I sometimes wonder how big Hagrid really is. A height like that would make you forget what kind of guy he actually is.

In Philosopher's Stone, Hagrid is mentioned as being twice as tall as the average man and nearly five times as wide. He's later described as "only" three times as wide somewhere. But that's the basis I went with.

Probably the one part that Warner Bros had trouble with when it came to wider shots. But I suppose since he is bigger than everybody else anyway I never seemed to care.

I think they treated much like the Lord of the Rings treated the Hobbits - doing most of the size differences with camera angels. And while I appreciate them trying to keep things in the "real world" and not rely too heavily on computers, sometimes, I'm for those kinds of effects if it makes things truer to the stories.

It does go to show that whatever effects you use doesn't necessarily make the film bad. I find the whole "practical effects are better" argument to be so biased.

I think the practical effects being better argument was a result of the time when computer graphics became so affordable, that a number of movies used them even though they didn't look very good. I'm with you, one type of effect isn't better than the other. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. The goal is to use the best one for any given moment.Β

I agree. Most fantasy movies I've seen use CGI to such great effect. Harry Potter, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The BFG, etc. If you've seen Kong: Skull Island, or just the 2005 reboot of King Kong, you'd see what I mean. Hell, I almost thought the effects really happened there.

Harry Potter used a decent balance - though some of the first movies used computer effects that weren't up to the quality they should be to use them... in my humble opinion. And I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would have benefited from some practical effects - though maybe they were just going for a certain look that just didn't happen to work for me.Β
BFG... that was a feast for my eyes. The effects couldn't have been used more perfectly. I don't know if it was all computer or mostly computer, but that was what I was talking about. I shouldn't be able to tell what was or wasn't done with a computer and just enjoy the movie. And I did that movie.
Skull Island, did a good job with the effects, I just have lukewarm feelings about the movie by comparison to the 2005 version - which was possibly one of my favorite movies. But both of those movies effects were great.

My humble opinion about that is the fact that the effects were still not perfected at the time.
But then I could be wrong. I do, however, think that the guys behind Charlie had most of those effects
for fantasy purposes. How else do you expect them to present Violet as a flexible little girl in the end? Or all
those Oompa Loompas? Also, special features did show that they had plenty of practical effects at hand.
Just wasn't easy to notice at first.
I agree.
I pretty much like both Kong movies for the same reason. I didn't know which one was practical or computer
and I wasn't given any reason to care.

You'd think that someone who's Hagrid's size would be so scary, but there is so much warmth in his eyes. I especially love your attention to detail when portraying his coat and you even included the mice!

Oh yes - for all intents and purposes, Hagrid should be super scary. But that's one of the beauties in the character - despite his size, he's about as lovable as they come

I don't know if that is true, I just set out to be as accurate as I can to be. But you are very kind to say - so thank you Β

I'm amazed at the tiny details in this picture (the ancient sofa with is propped up by books and leaking stuffing, Dudley's empty potato chip bag) but the most enchanting detail are the family of mice in Hagrid's pocket! Β I love him!
