Description

The SR-71 Blackbird featured here is placed at 24km (80k feet), not the maximum height at which these amazing spy planes can reach!

Composed and rendered in VUE 2015 Complete

Scene comprises of 50k polygons @ 150 hours render time.

Photoshop was also used for colour balancing and vibrancy toning while Filter Forge was used to add a subtle chromatic filter.

This scene took a lot of experimentation to render at a proper length of time whilst maintaining a healthy level of quality for the clouds. The clouds can be rendered relatively quickly at the expense of quality so whilst I wanted to maintain a good quality for the cloud layer I really wanted to keep the render time down to something more realistic.

At 150 hours render time I don’t think I found that sweet spot. Clouds look pretty though 

Thanks for viewing, all constructive criticisms welcome!

Lived in Utah for a couple of decades.
They have one at the air museum on
Hill Air Force Base in a hanger and it's
pretty much a shell. Kinda of a bummer
thinking it will never see the sky again.
But even gutted, it just exudes "BadAss".
And knowing it's former capabilities at the
same time just kinda makes the brain melt.

Considering the time period it was conceived, designed and built it was and still is a technological marvel. Still being used to this day at least by nasa... I think x)

Yea, same era we went to the moon with less
computing power on the planet than my cell phone... lol
Crazy what you can do with a slide rule!
And NASA does still have 2 of 'em, but they're
pretty vague about what they're using them for.
Have no idea whether they're flight capable.
I did discover they cost a small fortune to get
even one off the ground for even one flight, so
seems unlikely.
 Impressive piece of hardware.
