Yes, Tonks SHOULD have been the coolest character in the Potterverse, but she never actually demonstrated any of her coolness or kickass-ness. Instead her major contribution to the storyline was to have her depression over her unhappy love for aΒ spineless hypocriteΒ sap her powers, and thereby demonstrate that one's love life can effect one's Patronus. Apparently Merope Gaunt also suffered from Power-Sapping Love Syndrome, and possibly Eileen Prince as well. No wizard ever has thisΒ happen to him, only witches.
In order to redeem Tonks, in my own mind, from this total negation of her potential coolness, I assume that Molly dosed Tonks with love potion (she admits to using it in her youth) in an attempt to win her for Bill; it went astray and Tonks fixated on Remus instead. This works especially well if she and Lupin are both gay. They both certainly give off gay vibes, and lesbian!Tonks is ten times as cool as straight!Tonks. Certainly not a conscious conspiracy (can one person [JKR] form a conspiracy? Β Β ), only the old, tiresome unconscious cliche that women's lives focus entirely on men and therefore a woman who doesn't snag her man is a complete failure. I'm sure JKR had no idea she was doing it, but the pattern is there. Did Severus's lifelong failure to win his love weaken his power? Did Albus's loss of Gellert cause his magic to crumble? Somehow they survive unhappy love lives with powers intact, but Tonks and Merope don't.
