Description
I used to go to school every day with strings in my pocket
When I met a person I admired (and vice versa)
I gave them the end of one
I held the other, and we'd always be connected
Come time, I held the ends of all my strings
like the Fates held theirs

Despite them untwining their strings, we kept ours strong
with the firm belief that they were indestructible
We joked around, saying they could cut through steel and that
they made up the threads of Superman's cape

Recently, I noticed the fibers riving
I tried to loosen the stretch,
but the Fates had rendered us too far
I glanced at my hands, purple and bleeding from rope burn
It was impossible, but
all my strings were falling apart

I was walking down the street with my strings at my chest
when they all snapped back at me like rubber bands
cutting into my arms and sides like force-sharpened blades
tattered and frayed at the ends

These days, those broken strings are the only ones
I keep in my pocket.
