Chapter 3:««««Sasaria»»»»
I followed the trail made by my new find, before eventually arriving on the beach. I didn't come to the beach often, there was never a reason to. The fish were too small to eat, and most of the beach around the island was too small for me to relax on. I scanned the beach in search of it. "Had it swam into the ocean?" I was going to wade in and check before I noticed a faint sound coming from my feet. Looking down at my feet, there it was asleep in a circle of twigs. There was some sort of... thing... beside him making noise. It was oddly relaxing, even if the strange voice coming from it was spouting complete gibberish. I was considering waking it, curious to know more, before I thought it best to let it sleep. It had run away before, and let out that terrible noise, so this time I just decided to watch it. For some reason though, it looked familiar. I know I had seen this creature somewhere before, but I just couldn't place my finger on it.
…
…
…
This thing sleeps for hours! I was becoming quite bored simply watching my new find sleep, and was seriously considering just picking it up and taking it home. I had taken to trying to repeat the gibberish spouting from the little black thing by it's head. I just couldn't figure out what it was saying though! Soon though, en epiphany hit me! I finally knew where I had seen this creature before! Not only was it a human, but it was a he!
Interest restored, I stared in wonder at my find. A human! I thought I'd never find it here! Soon, he shifted, mumbling something to himself. I shifted myself to get more comfortable. He seemed to tense up when I did so though. I couldn't help thinking to myself, 'Oh no, don't tell me I'm going to have to chase him again.' Finally he turned around and faced me. He looked terrified. He fell over on his rear and began backing up frantically.
"It's alright, I don't want to hurt you." I tried to comfort him, but it only seemed to do the opposite as he grabbed his ears in pain and now looked even more scared. He pulled himself into a tight fetal position and began mumbling something to himself again. It occurred to me that I might be a little louder than him, so I lowered my voice and repeated myself. "It's alright, I don't plan on hurting you." He didn't grab his ears, but he didn't leave his fetal position either. I was becoming increasingly annoyed at his non responsiveness, so I reached down to pick him up and bring him to eye level. He must have noticed my hand though and quickly sprang backward, standing now. He began shouting something in gibberish and waving his hands back and forth. I had no idea what he was saying, but from the hand gestures I assumed he didn't want me to pick him up. I retracted my hand and tried to make heads or tails of my new human's words.
««««Cody»»»»
It tried to pick me up again! Oh, jeez. I'm having a small heart attack here! I noticed something strange, it didn't seem to react to my words. With the hand motions however, it must have gotten that I don't want to be picked up as it retracted it's hand. I tried to calm myself and think logically. 'Ok, ok. Shut up brain. She's obviously been here for a while now. If she wanted to hurt me or eat me or something, she would have.' It occurred to me that once I knew she might not hurt me, I stopped thinking of her as "it". 'I don't think she can understand English though. I have to try to communicate with her'. I calmed myself and looked up at her. Her face was contorted in confusion, trying to decipher what I had been saying. I put my plan into action.
"Cody," I said, making gestures towards myself. "I'm Cody."
She noticed the new movement and words and began staring intently again. She seemed deep in thought for a moment before saying something. "C-Cod?"
I realized she was trying and tried again, slowly this time. "Coooo-dyyyyy." I made the motions toward myself a bit more exaggerated so she would get the idea. I am Cody.
"Co-dy? Cody?" I nodded yes, causing her to look all too happy. She quickly brought her hand up to her chest and began making the same motion before repeating what I could only assume was her name. This took me a while.
"S-Sara... Siri... Sasori?" I felt like an idiot and she did the same exaggerated movement while repeating her name slower. I didn't know if she was legit or mocking me at that point. "Sasaria?" She nodded happily. "Ok, Sasaria," I held out my hand absentmindedly, "It's nice to meet you, I guess."
She must have taken the hand shake as the wrong gesture, as she saw fit to snatch me up and bring me to eye level before standing, smiling. It took everything I had to keep from yelling at her once the movement stopped. I wanted to tell her that you don't just pick people up, you don't! Then I remembered as I looked at my reflection in those eyes again that she could easily just crush me or pop me in her mouth or something if I ticked her off. Instead I decided to be more diplomatic in my approach. I realized I was flat on my back in her palm, so I sat up to get a better look at her. "Alright," I started, "Please. Just put me down." I illustrated this by moving my hands down slowly. "Down." She looked at me again, confused by my words, before visibly gasping. She quickly, all too quickly, moved her hand back to ground level. I crawled off as fast as I could and stayed where I was, sitting on the nice, safe ground. She started saying something, something very loud, in gibberish. I held my ears and tried to make heads or tails of what she was saying, before realizing she must be going through the same thing with me. Minus the ear splitting part. She crouched back down, and repeated whatever she had said in a quieter tone. I looked up at her and she looked sad. Why?
My guy instincts kicked in and I stood up, walking towards her. "Are you alright?" I asked. I tried to think of a hand gesture for "alright" before trying my luck and making a thumbs up. "Alright? Are you alright?" She must be getting better at this whole gesture thing, because she shook her head. It was her turn to play charades. As she spoke she pointed first at me, then at herself, then began cowering for a moment. I placed two and two together and realized why she was sad. I was scared of her. I know I had every right to be, but now my guy instincts were kicking me for making a girl sad. She sat back and curled up in a weak fetal position, staring at her feet. Something else clicked. She had never seen a human before. She wouldn't have been so fascinated in me or confused by me if she had. This was her first interaction, and I was making her feel like a monster. I steeled my nerves and walked up to her. Every portion of my body was telling me to go the other way, but I ignored it. Finally I reached her foot and tried my best to give her a reassuring pat. It felt ridiculous, but it got her attention.
"I'm," I pointed to myself. "Not," I made a horizontal chopping motion. "Scared," I cowered a bit. "Of you." I finished by pointing at her. I had to lie for her sake. She just watched me for a moment, tears in her eyes, before smiling. She moved her hand from around her legs causing me to flinch, and patted me. Not softly, but you could tell she was watching her actions now. She stood up then and made her way to the jungle line. I was about to call out to her, tell her she didn't have to go, but she was already gone. I laid back down in my wood base, listening to my music, wondering what the future held for me.
~~So I walked away, walked away~~
~~Cause I heard you say, that it'll never be the same~~
~~I should have walked away, walked away~~
~~Voice inside me shouts out loud~~
~~The silence feels more silent now~~
I swear my phone does this sort of stuff on purpose.

I continued through the jungle, back to my home, before realizing it would be dark before I reached safety. I didn't want to worry Chalo by being gone all day and night, but I also didn't want Chalo to find my body mangled by some animal out here. I tried to think of other options. Sleep in a tree? Plenty of animals could get to me still. Build camp here? Not enough materials, and not enough time. Pretty soon, I had run through every option I could think of but one.
Go back to the beach.
Cody's beach was just large enough for me to lie along it for the night. I turned for a moment before remembering how he reacted to almost everything I did. If I spoke normally, it hurt him. If I picked him up, he was scared out of his mind. If I moved to do something else, he thought I was moving to crush him. I couldn't go back, I made him too uncomfortable. I did need a place to sleep though, so I made my way to the beach while changing my course slightly. I would just sleep on a different part of the beach from him.
I found a nice little spot where the trees curved around this portion of the beach slightly, concealing me from him. I laid down, resting my head on my hands, looking at the rising moon, and cried quietly.

I really like this. I've always been a fan of stories that give both sides, so neither party is a 'dumb beast' to the audience. Excellent.

Thanks. It was a new thing for me considering I decided on a language barrier. By the end they'll be able to hold full on conversations of course, but for now charades is a more efficient method of communication.
