Description A "recipe" for realistic miniature bread that almost feels like baking real bread: all you need is water, baking powder and.. well, polymer clay instead of flour!

This was adapted from this tecnique (wich is probably my all-time favourite!!).
However, this method uses just polymer clay, instead of Liquid polymer clay (which is quite pricey!).
Also, you won't need any mold!
All you have to do is to knead the baking soda into the polymer clay and shape it as you want before baking. So much fun!

Ps. After a few tests, I found that while you can color the bread with chalks before baking, the colour does wear off a little, so I suggest to paint your miniatures with acrylic paints instead

Do you think this would work with the Milliput brand? It's not a clay, but rather an epoxy resin.

I'm not familiar with this particular brand so I can't tell for sure - but I'm pretty sure this will only work if you bake the piece. I don't think the baking powder/soda will be able to rise without some kind of "heating".. does this make any sense?

Yup, it does. I suppose that this can't be used with any no-bake material then, which is a shame!

Hello, Stella! It's the best bread I'vе ever seen! Thank you very much for the wonderful tutorial on YouTube. It helped me a lot. I have worked with polymer clay for a few months only but thanks to you I managed to make my own bread. You can see it here if you want

Again, thank you for sharing your skills and I hope you are happy and inspired for days to come.

Oh, yes, Stella, it was very useful. I made again the bread in my tavern, using your ways and it came out much better than my first try. And your bread collection inspires me to start a new project - medieval bakery, with oven and many breads. But I have so many ideas and so little time for all of them.

sonickingscrewdriver [2014-09-30 17:17:08 +0000 UTC]

It looks amazing! I tried it with both baking soda and powder, and both turned out too crumbly and there weren't any air bubbles. Was this because there was too little water added, or too much soda/powder? D: Thanks in advance

thinkpastel In reply to sonickingscrewdriver [2014-10-20 09:57:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh this happens to me too, once in a while
I'm not sure which one is the cause - my bet is ..both! I've noticed this either happens when I use too much water or too much baking soda. Unfortunately it takes a few tries to guess the right water/soda proportions.. and even then sometimes you might have a bad batch

woah-man [2014-06-28 23:17:19 +0000 UTC]

This is super duper cool! But I do have one question:

How'd you get the split along the top of the crust? Did that happen on its own in the oven or did you sculpt that in? I might have missed something, but in the video it looked like you just sculpted a plain log with no texture on the outside and it came out of the oven with that split.

I've tried this method a couple times, and I've nearly got the inside down, I just need to make the outside look realistic too!

thinkpastel In reply to woah-man [2014-07-02 14:58:52 +0000 UTC]

You got it right, unfortunately there is no control over the 'split'.
It's the result of the clay expanding for the combination of baking powder and heat.
I've tried several times to see if I could purposely give the bread that 'split': made a cut on the clay, twisted/folded it like I would do with actual bread.. none of that worked!
I'm afraid that there is no way to predict if and where the 'split' will appear

Anyhow, I have to say that even without 'splits' the outside texture comes pretty good, unlike the 'liquid clay' method (with liquid clay the outside is usually very even and shiny; with this method it looks grainy and rough)

Thanks for getting back to me! I've yet been able to get one to appear so I will keep trying.

that looks amazing!! I'm going to have to try your adaptation sometime. Fantastic job, hun!

and just curious, are you using baking soda or baking powder?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thinkpastel In reply to SilkTopHatSally [2014-06-26 17:58:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh sweetie you made an excellent point, I keep confusing their names!
I used baking powder in the video; however, you can use baking soda, as well. I find that you may need to use a little more if you use soda (just slightly, though. Too much will make the clay crumbly and easy to break!)

SilkTopHatSally In reply to thinkpastel [2014-06-26 19:46:29 +0000 UTC]

ah, gotchya! I figured you could use either, but the textures are different, so I wasn't sure which would work out better as far as the baked result. Thank you, doll!
