Description
Download for full view. Our character design professor Ray Goto taught us this method so I thought it'd only be fair to pass it along. It makes life easier, doesn't it? LoL It was an eye opener. But again, this doesn't work with foreshortening, and in my opinion most poses are pretty stiff without foreshortening, however this'll definitely give you a step in the right direction! Thanks!
Please comment if you fave, so I know if this tutorial is usefull or not. I'm usually not a stickler about comment-fave ratio, except when it comes to my tuts. That way I know what to do for the next one! Thanks!

That's really helpful! I like to place the hands before I draw the arms but I never knew about the measuring! Thank you for making this!

This in principle is so simple - it's a wonder that this is such a common problem. I always remember that the elbow is three heads down, at the bellybutton, mid-torso, yet even with the guidelines, sometimes my arms end up being too long or short.
Your little trick is foolproof. Great tutorial!

It doesn't seem to work if the hand is raised over the head, but this still is like omgwhat amazing. xD I never knew this!

ThirdPotato In reply to GrowlyLobita [2009-03-01 21:21:51 +0000 UTC]
LoL Yeah it doesn't really work for like... foreshortening and generally speaking it's hard to put your hand above your head and make it not foreshortened even a little. Also doesn't work for straightened arms xD but I guess that goes without saying.

Speaking of foreshortening. Are there any good tutorials on that one that you know of?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ThirdPotato In reply to scuffndings [2009-03-01 20:12:27 +0000 UTC]
There are lots of really great references to that in those How To Draw Manga books which most people scoff at XD But they have some VERY pertinent information! In fact, I used to reference those ALL the time, and yet it never sunk in until college when my profs taught the exact same thing XD But I think there's some HTDM books on anatomy, and some "general" HTDM books that cover all that foreshortening bizznazz. But I'm also sure if you browse the tutorials on dA there'll be plenty foreshortening tuts.
With foreshortening the secret really is to imagine each part of the body like forms; cylinders, spheres, cubes etc. Then just imagine those figures overlapping and foreshortening in space. If you have some building blocks study those at different angles to get a good grasp, because in the end, all an arm is two cylinders connected by a sphere/elbow generally speaking.
