Description In-game shot of the game project Forgotten. This is a shot from the fourth level, the town of Uberis after the natural invasion.

helped me for the textures. Some roots are made by Eddy Khaou.

Almost every buildings are started with boxes which I add edges and extrude to make the roof, the windows etc...

how much time have you spend in this game already?

my vacations are close and so i want to try something in the unreal kit (UDK)
i have to convince some friends to help me to develop something, i know how hard it's to make something this big alone
can you give me some tips or an advice before beggin?

We spent about more than 4 months. 2 months about basic programming and artistic researches, and 2 months of 3D, animation and final programming.

I didn't use UDK for this project, but I want to use it for next year. The graphic result is so cool but the scripting seems very hard to master... And as I don't want to be a programmer, I don't want to lose too many times for drawing and modelings...

So I don't know for the moment. I try to read some tutorials on the net.

This game kinda reminds me of a very old starwars game.
Starwars - Phantom Menace. Damn, i loved that game when I was little.

Played it just recently though and realised how terrible it compared to the new ones. XD

I guess it was Naboo level in jungle and green fog too? ^^
I never tried that game but there was a similar level in the end of Jedi Knight 2.

I am passionate about games and I wonder how many people I need to develop an initial work area in 3D, I have done some games but nothing to compare to your project, you're doing it alone??

Well it depends on what you want to do, really. For example, if you just want to make a 3D arena for a multiplayer game with already a modding editor, you can do alone. But if you want to create a game engine from nothing, you surely have to ask a programmer.
And if you want your project to have a solid universe, you can do it alone but it's nice to work with many artists too.

For example, for my project, we were 5 (originally 6). 4 did the artistic research, 2 did the programming, everybody did the modelings, 3 did the animation etc...

I did the major part of the modeling, but the design of the 2 main characters were done by different persons. And I'm not good at animation so I didn't do. It's important to work with many people with different capacity.

We are totally 5 on it, but the major parts of the 3 levels I post on DA were done by me. But there are many works done in 2D too, like who worked for the character design, the storyboard, the cutscenes and who did the design of Lex (the pet), and the major part of the level design, animations, textures etc...

It could be playable on internet maybe, because the game is playable on an internet browser, we just have to install a plug-in. But the game contains a lot of bugs anyway and it's pretty huge (800mo with all the sounds, musics, videos etc...) so I don't know for the moment.

i've watched all the screenshots and the overall work is very good. some notes : you probably need to enhance the characters shadows. in this particular shot, the characters looks like models because they stand too straight and you need to create more loosened up / expressive poses.
anyhow the atmosphere of the city is in place.

And thanks for your advices. For the character shadows, I first thought that the game engine will make better dynamic shadows but it wasn't the case and I didn't have times to change it in the end. For the next game I'll make it next year, I will try to enhance it.

We used Virtools, and we have 3 or 4 big omni lights to make the global lighting.

alors pour virtools, si tu utilises des lampes omni pour faire l'éclairage global, peut-être devrais-tu contraster plus (amplitude et couleurs) de manière à éclairer de manière plus franche.

Merci du conseil. Après pour l'année prochaine j'étais au départ parti pour utiliser Virtools à nouveau, mais les gens du groupe semblent vouloir utiliser UDK. Vu les capacités je suis partant, mais ça me fait un peu peur quand même. Vu qu'il s'agit d'un moteur utilisé par énormément de grands jeux, je me dis qu'il doit pas être super accessible non plus...
