Description Near's sock puppet is happy, but he doesn't look happy, himself. Ballpoint drawing I did really quick this evening...it's my favorite Near picture of the evening (I drew four others.)

Near is from the anime/manga Death Note, and belongs to Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

I give permission to the clubs I'm in to re-post this in their galleries and link back to the original.

I just found this one, I thought I had all of your stuff...I like it, it's perfectly reasonable, since most people do something similar with their toys when their younger anyway, why not Near? Of course, I didn't use sock puppets when I was a kid...I love it, great expression and a good concept. Faved, saved, and filed!

LOL...well the difference is that Near ISN'T a child here, he's an adult! But he acts childish enough to play with toys, so sock puppets are fine for him when he's all grown up, even.

I didn't use sock puppets as a kid, either...I was too busy making bows and arrows in the orchard by cutting down saplings.

After I drew this picture, I found a cute comic by ~hitohai that has L playing with sock puppets.

I've been there...not in an orchard, but I've made my share of bows and arrows.

It beat playing with Barbie dolls, I say! (Those we either buried in the front yard or, later, blew up with fireworks on the 4th of July. XD; No, actually we STILL do that last one--LOL)

Because of my older brother, a few of my G.I. Joes ended up on the grill and thoroughly roasted. I don't think I've ever blown up a toy. I'm too sentimental now to do that to any of my old toys (I still carry them around with me...most of them were gifts and I think that means something, so I don't get rid of them).

Awww, why is Near not happy? Perhaps because the sock puppet is taking over his hand, thus keeping him from playing with toys in both hands. Oh poor Near!

He Is happy--he's just using the sock puppet to show it instead of his face. That's why he looks all bored, but it's all " !"

The best kind of sock puppet there is! If someone handed that to me I'd play with it (in costume or not).

I would, too--they're fun! I like plushies, too...I guess some toys you don't grow out of, ne?

I don't think I'll ever grow out of toys. I want to get a 1000 piece Lego set and try to build a robot out of them. I have a concept and design, but I need the actual Legos to do it. I think it would be awesome to be able to build a robot with moving limbs without adding anything electrical into it (by using hinges or round wheels in the arms/legs of the lego robot).

I had a friend who could do stuff like that, without batting an eyelash. He built such a robot in the 8th grade, but it got destroyed by the kids who stayed after school for a program.

I say there's no age limit on toys and having fun just for the sake of having fun. Because of this, I am at ease in cosplay, and so apparently I get mistaken for a high schooler a lot despite being in my 20s.

Aww, poor robot.

Haha, it's so much fun to cosplay! Recently, I bought a yo-yo and I am looking up how to do different tricks online. It would be a hilarious sight to see a yo-yoing Near cosplayer

Yes, may the robot...dare I say...rest in pieces

Threshie In reply to RuneQuicksilver [2010-04-19 07:27:22 +0000 UTC]

Awww, Near with a yo-yo! That's one I haven't seen yet. XD You'll take pictures posing with the yo-yo, I hope? A bright red one seems fitting somehow, in the classic toy feel of a red wagon and red ball and such. Hmm. Maybe it's subconsciously similar to Death Note's theme of apples?

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2010-04-20 19:12:30 +0000 UTC]

I will! Though the yo-yo I happen to have isn't red...though I want one!

But yes I shall take pictures! I actually just ordered a remote control for my camera...so maybe I'll be able to take some better pics?

Threshie In reply to RuneQuicksilver [2010-04-20 19:40:14 +0000 UTC]

Any color will do, red is just the one that popped to mind when I thought of yo-yos. Maybe that just means my mind has been exposed to red yo-yos more than others? XD; Anyway, a camera remote sure sounds fun! Where did you order yours? I've always wanted to experiment with some camera equipment/techniques beyond just pressing the shutter button.

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2010-04-20 20:17:43 +0000 UTC]

I think when people think of yo-yos, they think of pretty solid ones...like a wagon or a kite. Mine is a cheap, two dollar yo-yo I bought when I was out with a friend of mine getting Chinese one night. We stopped in the dollar general store and there it was!

I actually ordered mine online from the manufacturer of my camera (I have a Panasonic) though those tend to be a little pricy. I just didn't want to risk the remote not working with the camera.

Threshie In reply to RuneQuicksilver [2010-04-20 22:14:08 +0000 UTC]

XD If it was at a dollar store, why did it cost two dollars and not one? This reminds me, while at Sakura-Con I went to a Japanese 1.50 store...it was AWESOME. Must go back sometime, everything in there was imported Japanese stuff!

Ah, cool! My camera is a Nikon D40x. Nikon's a pretty big brand name, so I could probably find a matching remote...the problem would be the price, as the camera itself cost about 1,000 new. I bought it with a scholarship from college, as I was the Photo Editor of the college newspaper back then and needed something to do quality photography with.

RuneQuicksilver In reply to Threshie [2010-04-20 22:18:08 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I wasn't sure if I clarified or not, but it was a Dollar General store (or maybe it was Family Dollar). Dollar General stores basically mean that although most stuff is a dollar, there are some things that aren't only one dollar. That doesn't mean they are better quality...

Ah! So you have an epically amazing camera...mine is a fairly cheap camera (not too cheap). It's a Panasonic with a really awesome touch interface...I love it so much!

He looks a lot like L. XD I'm loving his expression. Is it odd that I can totally imagine him doing that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to kittyhina [2009-01-07 02:13:12 +0000 UTC]

XD It's not odd at all--he plays with finger puppets, why not sock puppets?

As for him looking like L... I drew this before I knew that somebody else had drawn a comic where L plays with sock puppets! L was much more into it, though--he talked TO them. XD

It is! Here's a link: [link] (I recommend you read this entire comic series--they're hilarious, and there are English translations for every one. XDD I especially love the 'tooth fairy' one and the one about shopping. Keep an eye out for those if you check any others out--they'll make you sputter for sure!)

Yeah, I'm thinking the ventriloquist act where the person looks deadpan and their puppet is very animated.

Threshie In reply to KazeKasai [2008-11-06 03:12:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, he doesn't seem very good at expressing himself in a way that others see as sincere. I noticed a few times he politely thanked people for things and they got offended in the series. XD;
