Overall, they are herbivores. There have been many cases though of herbivores that will eat meat (not a common sight but it does happen). For elephants, there was a case in India of an elephant that attacked a village out of revenge (killing 17 people) over her calf being killed. After they killed the elephant, they found human remains in it's stomach.

Fun fact! There is actually prove that elephants CAN eat meat. A female whose calf was killed by farmers in India found HUMAN REMAINS in her gut!
