〚ᴛᴡ ғᴏʀ sᴇʟғ ʜᴀʀᴍ, ɢʀᴀᴘʜɪᴄ ᴀᴛᴛᴇᴍᴘᴛᴇᴅ sᴜɪᴄɪᴅᴇ, ᴀɴᴅ ᴍᴇɴᴛɪᴏɴ ᴏғ ᴄʜɪʟᴅʜᴏᴏᴅ sᴇxᴜᴀʟ ᴀʙᴜsᴇ〛

There are lots of smart people on the planet; plenty of gifted & talented youth, scores of intelligent minds. Seth isn’t one of them, he never has been. Seth is above and beyond, a certifiable genius who would coast through a Mensa qualification test no problem, with an IQ at or approaching the 160s--in practice and on paper, he’s superbly intelligent. From a young age, this was apparent--and his parents fawned over him for his potential. Unfortunately, no matter of genius or booksmarts can subvert the fallout of trauma--and after falling victim to a year of bi-weekly sexual abuse starting at just age nine, good grades and college prospects slowly dimmed in importance for Seth. He coasted by academically; school could hardly challenge him--emotionally, though, he floundered. Low self-worth, the “othering” effect of trauma, the way teachers singled him out as remarkable--Seth had great difficulty when it came to making friends. His height and obvious value to the school administration kept him insulated from bullying, but he was an emotional island. Cut-off, separated, inaccessible. Indeed, the only real bond he had was with Athena, his little sister. She was vastly different from him--outgoing, eccentric, disinterested in academia-- and Seth did everything in his power to protect her from the barbs of their parents, who made no effort to hide their favoritism for Seth, their 'perfect' “Golden Child.”

Feeling tainted, pressured, dirty and disconnected for eight years took its toll, and at age seventeen Seth decided to hell with college applications, with medical school and dreams of becoming a surgeon. To hell with scholarships, with Mensa, with his only value being his parents’ bragging rights. He was planning on becoming a doctor, of course he knew where his radial and ulnar arteries were--so he slashed them both horizontally, sliced into his brachial artery in two places and sawed vertically along the median antebrachial vein in each arm until he passed out from blood loss--just for good measure. Athena, just eleven at the time, came home early from school and found him, called 911. He died on the table twice, destroyed any chance he’d ever had at being a surgeon with the irreparable damage he did to his nerves, his tendons. And as his physical and mental state came to light, as his scholarship offers could no longer be accepted, he finally slipped from his parents good graces.

He quit therapy, physical and psychological, and moved out of his parents’ house as soon as he could--and it didn’t take too long before Athena joined him and he became her legal guardian. Seth, with the loss of the use of his hands, with his decision to give up on college--had come to terms with the fact that he would never be a surgeon, would never save lives. And yet... Athena, under his care, bounced back from the eating disorder her parents allowed her to slip into. And then Seth alone managed to subdue--and save--Athena’s closest friend, Kohao--despite his backpack arsenal and his rage. And it was only a couple months later that Seth sprinted two blocks to the hospital, cradling 17-year-old Anarchy in the same arms that he’d all but severed at that age. Did what so many others would never do, took a stranger, an addict, into his home, his heart, determined to help him recover. You’d think he’d realize he’d managed to become a savior by the time he pulled Aetos back from the railing of the bridge.

He hasn’t, though, not yet. A confidant for all his friends, he conceals as much of himself as he can--and though he promised Athena in his hospital bed all those years ago to never let himself slip so far again, Seth self-medicates with alcohol and the nights of being near black-out drunk and traumatized, alone with his thoughts and his razors, have left him with further marks of suicidality across his throat and chest and stomach--stitched into scars rather than casket frilling only because his ever-attentive friend, Jazz, hasn’t let late-night pleas for help go unanswered. Finally, though, now that his instability is leaving him with scars that a high collar and tie could never hope to hide, Aetos and Jazz have managed--however slightly--to crack his armor...And maybe, slowly, guide him toward a path of recovery.
