Awh, nice!

Wait... how did you get the shape keys imported to Blender? I've been pulling my hair out trying to find a way.

TimeLordEnglish In reply to Friskit-The-Smart [2012-03-22 00:15:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't blame you, it's a ridiculous process that is really hard to find information on. You basically have to extract all the flexes as .obj files from the .dmx, import them one by one into Blender and then join them to the original head mesh as a shape key. I should do up a short tutorial on it at some point.

Friskit-The-Smart In reply to TimeLordEnglish [2012-03-22 00:41:28 +0000 UTC]

Is that the dmxedit method? I've looked into it but wasn't able to actually do it myself, I kept getting errors.

What else I've tried is using the vtaapply and vtacreate tools I found on some facepunch forums, which, if you haven't used them, though you probably have, the former takes a frame from the .vta and applies it to the reference .smd model to create a new .smd with the full flex, and the latter takes the reference .smd and the flexed .smd to create a .vta. But they don't quite work. Vtaapply screws up the vertex count somehow, it's really odd. Thus, importing the .vta files into Blender won't work, and importing the flexed .smd models and trying to join as shapes to make a shape key results in utter catastrophe.

I'd be forever grateful if you did a tutorial, really. This process is so needlessly complicated.

Yeah, dmxedit. I wrote a little set of instructions for myself detailing how I got it to work and saved it in a text file so I remember how to do it. Here's what's in it just in case it's useful (I'll just edit the directory paths to be a little more generic. You'll have to fix them to match your own computer of course).

[link]

1. Copy .dmx file(s) into
C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/[username]/sourcesdk/bin/source2009/bin/

2. Make empty vs.lua file in said directory (or make sure it's still there if you've made it before)

3. Make myfile.lua, with content:

Load( "C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/[username]/sourcesdk/bin/source2009/bin/[filename].dmx" )
Save("C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/[username]/sourcesdk/bin/source2009/bin/[filename].obj")

(Make sure you use forward slashes)

4. Open Windows command prompt
cd to bin folder
run:

dmxedit -nop4 myfile.lua

5. Retrieve extracted .obj file(s) from bin folder and import them

6. Delete unneeded .dmx files from bin folder

7. If extracting face flexes - import .obj into base model's file, delete non-head meshes, remove rotation, then select new head mesh, then original head mesh, and choose "join as shape" under the black triangle next to the shape keys.

these skins or models are amazing. Your gmodding has improved a lot!

Heavy needs glasses PLEASE I have a giant Heavy weapons guy glasses fetish for good reasons.
Also, I need some tongue action PLEASE.

seriously though this is awesome. thanks for making my day

TimeLordEnglish In reply to GirlZombie [2011-11-13 03:54:17 +0000 UTC]

Heh, this isn't Garry's Mod, it's posed in Blender. I haven't got these models compiled yet.

I have half a mind to refit the Medic's glasses to the Heavy's head, rig them to his head bone, and then release them for use with the bonemerger tool, heh.

Okay, how the heck did you get the textures to work in blender? I can't figure it out for the life of me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TimeLordEnglish In reply to moodyblues [2011-11-13 03:50:51 +0000 UTC]

Go into edit mode for the mesh you want to texture, select everything, then pull up a UV/Image Editor window and image->open image and find your texture file. Seems to work for me at least.

Ok, I've been looking at this for a while now, but I still can't find this "misuse" that you speak of, so I'm going to say that there is none.

The "casual clothing" models look REALLY nice! Well done!
The shadows and lighting in these shots kinda makes them look like those models you buy from the Valve store.... if only.
