I didn't understand anything about this clipping mask.

When you create a clipping mask on a layer, whatever you drew on that layer only shows on the opaque parts of the layer below, the transparent parts are left blank. So, say, if you drew a lineart on one layer, where only the lineart is opaque, the rest it transparent, then on the layer above you applied a gradient of purple to blue then with the gradient layer selected, created a clipping mask, The lineart would be their but it would have the purple to blue gradient of the layer above.
