Description
From left-to-right: Scarlet Hood, Spindle Shank (top), Rufus (bottom), Earth Star, Rameale, Honey, Marco, Grey Coral, Dune...Okay, so I spent for-bloody-ever on this, anticipating a really awesome background where they were performing on a stage together or something, buuut...
These characters had other plans.
Since my ability to draw backgrounds is bunk, and it sent my plans through the ground so fast that they ended up in China, I just decided to do a quick mock-up and submit that. None of the characters are shaded, or positioned/sized properly, but I did do the important stuff so far. Scarlet Hood and Dune are using magic, and Marco is dead.
Yep.
As far as the designs go:
- I've finally perfected Scarlet Hood's design. She's undergone so many changes over the years, it's not even funny. (The only thing that's stayed more or less the same over the years is her hair.) I think I'm happy with the end result. Ask me again in a week.
- Spindle Shank didn't really get a design overhaul so much as he's just younger here. (He still gets his "spikes" look later on.) His younger look has undergone some changes, though. Initially, I played with the idea of him having long hair in the front and short in the back, but on a toadlet, it looks absolutely horrible (I couldn't make it work, at least), so I tried to think of a hair style that would leave the back of his neck visible when he's not wearing the cape, and that would make sense in his transition to a spiky mohawk later. Eventually, I decided to base Spindle Shank's hairstyle off of the one worn by Ramses and later his son in the movie, The Prince of Egypt. (If you have not seen that movie, go watch it now.) I think it's super cute, so I think this design will stick.
- Rufus still looks the same as always. (Special thanks to Starimo for her contribution to his design.) I don't see it changing anytime soon either.
- Earth Star is Earth Star, and the only thing I made different is that he's wearing his sunglasses around his neck instead of on top of his head. He's already an official Toad Patrol character, so there's very little I can do without ruining him.
- Rameale got a complete design overhaul. It hurt because I absolutely adored his old design, but he just didn't fit in with anything, and I like my characters to be at least somewhat consistent. I may change his grass hair thingerdoodle later, because it was a nightmare to line. Could you imagine trying to animate it?!
- Honey still looks more or less the same... I think I made her hair longer. (Special thanks to TaksArt for her contribution to her design.) I may want to revise her at some point just because I think she looks a little... bland? I don't know, I'll figure it out!
- Marco hasn't really changed, but I've never drawn him full-bodied before, so that was exciting. I don't see his design changing in the foreseeable future, except for maybe his clothes.
- Grey Coral was a new experience entirely, and it shocks me because I've had her as a part of my story for over a decade. Hard to believe I've only ever drawn her maybe... twice, thrice? Either way, it's not a lot for a character I've had for that long. I like what I've come up with, but I may tweak the colours on her clothes some more.
- And Dune's design hasn't really changed. I did tweak his colours, but overall, I love it, so I'm keeping it.
Overall, my experience was this:
RAMEAAALE!
... I'd do it again.
But for now, I think I'm going to call this complete with the option to return to it later.
