Description
I remember putting this up on Discord a while back, but only now have I bothered to clean it up. Drawing scales isn't fun you guys. @_@WITHOUT FURTHER ADO...a Dark Souls beastie, but in a different light.

The Least Crystallisk. Or in other words...
A critically endangered species. They are a relative of the eight-legged Basilisks clinging to life in a series of mountain ranges within the Royal Kingdom, known as Chrysopoiea Cave, just outside of the City of Auric. It was said that their populations were far more distributed, even having colorful subspecies on other Kingdoms, yet these have never been seen before.
FACTS:
- The main reason they're covered with stony scales and crystals is to provide protection against predators. It allows them to either hide from predators by blending in, or their scales simply make them too tough to eat. Ecologically speaking, it's a brilliant survival strategy.
- However, they aren't built to defend themselves against people at all. Many humanoid races seek out the crystals growing on them, as their magic properties can greatly reinforce weapons and armor. In order to preserve the integrity of the crystals, people harvesting them have found that it is best to bludgeon them, often in the ribs or skull, leaving the undamaged crystals ripe for harvest. Worse still, the Crystallisks can't outrun people, as they typically don't need to run away from threats.
- They were hunted so indiscriminately that in modern times, there are fewer than 200 of them left in the wild. It was only relatively recently that the Crystallisk Conservation Programme was assembled, to help guide them back to a sustainable population. Nowadays, Chrysopoiea Cave is considered a nature reserve, and they are strictly protected until their populations can make a recovery.
- Least Crystallisks are also bred in captivity. However, because these sites do not contain the same minerals and crystals that their natural habitat does, these captive Crystallisks do not grow crystals. There are plans to release them into the wild when a sufficient number of them has been reached.
