Some thoughts under the cut
1) Thinking a lot about End Times, both Biblical and not, and conspiracy theories, and the way people tend to suddenly become much more eschatological when we are faced with dire situations. Every generation likes to interpret an incoming apocalypse or prophecy as pertaining to ourselves, but honestly, even if you (like me) do subscribe to the Bible and believe that there is a final End of All Things, it is very much Unknown to man what hour it will be. In the meantime, humankind has survived through many supposed “ends.”
2) It’s interesting to note that “apocalypse” originally doesn’t mean “end,” but Revelation. Maybe despite oncoming “ends,” we can learn from these revelations, about ourselves and about other people, and take those lessons to heart.
3) A Libation is, according to my apple dictionary, “the pouring out of a drink as an offering to a deity.” Thinking about that meaning, as well as the prophecy of the pouring out of the bowls of judgement in Revelation.
4) This was kind of inspired by some imagery from a zine I made for class based around the concept of “End Times” that I decided to expand into an actual illustration. Samples from the zine you can see here , and you can also get it for free / pay what you want here on gumroad .
5) I kind of feel like I’m returning to my roots in a way, once again doing the weird art w/ a kind of historical-fantasy bent with lots of linework–after I made my Baba Yaga illustrations for my AP portfolio / RISD application, i kind of got really exhausted and didn’t really attempt anything as complicated afterwards. Still, the aesthetic of sinking, derelict war machines and eldritch creatures combined together I guess has stuck with me, and I love the level of detail that I can get with traditional line art.
