Description
Hey all. I got a chance to finish my notes and drawings for Assignment #4: Tommy animation poses. See my past journal (assignment #4) for instructions if you forgot them. This is the first one, by Alexandria Monik. Alexandria, send me a note if you have any problems with my notes as these are the unedited version that will be included in my book.First off, I want it to be clear that there are many, many different ways to thumbnail out any action. Thousands, in fact. For each of the sketch suggestions I have given as my Mentor notes for these two talented artists, I could have made so many subtle changes and variations- with each change creating a domino effect of changes to each subsequent thumbnail pose. Because of this, the way I approached reviewing these thumbnail submissions was to 1) try and work with the idea the artist has come up with (hopefully not losing the story or emotions they are trying to show) and 2) going with the first ideas I see that will strengthen what the artist has created.
MENTOR NOTES FOR Example #1:
Example Submission #1 is drawn by Alexandria Monik.
Alexandria did a great job with this Tommy story and told it in a very funny way. The drawings are very clearly drawn, but the poses are a bit stiff and not quite as clearly silhouetted as they could be. That is the big thrust for my sketch changes in drawings #1 through #3, clarity. I turned Tommy in Pose #1 to the (page) left a big so that the arms are more clear of each other; additionally, I have him more slumped over so that when he goes into Pose #2, there is a stronger change in his body shape. In Pose #3, the important ting I am trying to show is to get his head out (free of his shoulders) and- most of all- getting the cereal bowl flying in front of him where it can be seen clearly by the audience. In Poses #4 and #5 I thought it was stronger to the story to save the gag reveal for Pose #6 by keeping the bowl turned over on him. A slight head tilt on Pose #5 also helps to spotlight the eye direction change. In Pose #6- the big reveal- tilting the torso and opening the arms and legs up more gives the reveal of his pants mess a bit more punch. Alexandria already had the ending working well in Pose #7, I just hunched Tommy over a bit more so he seemed even more disturbed. Lastly, I added a milk spill trail to Pose #8 so that there is a little bit of a βperiodβ at the end of this scene.

It's interesting how Alexandria and Brad both interpreted differently the brief.
In a real-case scenario who would decided what reaction would be best? the director? or would they play with both and see what fits the story best?

Yeah, the director would have the final call on that. Usually, the animator would do what they think it should be first, but then the director would say change it or not.

These lessons are so awesome. Even though I haven't submitted anything I feel like I'm learning a lot just by looking at this.
Both the action thumbnails look great but I thought it was kind of funny how in the first set the milk on the face looks like a 5 o clock shadow at first glance. xD
Awesome work to both of you!

Apart from this being great and all, I actually like Alexandria's version a bit better, because what you call "stiffness" appeals to me as more realistic (I like to call this "European") as compared to your more cartoony ("Disney") approach.
American animation and comics often have an exaggerated dynamic (e.g. "Drawing Comics the Marvel Way") that to someone like me, who has grown up with Belgian comics is often a bit to "loud" and unsubtle.
Your no. 7 looks too hunchback-of-notre-dame to me. The original catches the pose of an angry youth with capitulating hanging arms perfectly.

You have good points as far as culture goes. Alexandria did a great job, I agree. In some cases, I do go too far, some of that is to more clearly illustrate a point, others are my sensabilities (or lack thereof)!

One thing I like more in the top sketches is you can tell he's annoyed right away, he kind of just looks upset in the second set of sketches at first, then becomes annoyed at the end..
