Description June/July 2016 marks some big anniversaries for these classic rivals! Let's quickly go through some...

MARIO
- 35 years of Mario and Donkey Kong (in July)
- 20 years of Super Mario 64

SONIC
- 25 years of Sonic and Eggman
- 15 years of Sonic Adventure 2

While the rivalry between these two isn't nearly as fierce nowadays, we'll always remember how it started out when Sonic sprang onto our screens with his infamous blast processing... whatever that meant. But in the end, even if Mario's had a much more consistent career, you can't deny that both of them are timeless icons.

I used to hate Sonic because of this back then. I was overjoyed when the SNES defeated the Genesis, and Mario won over Sonic. Now, even I have accepted that Sonic and Mario are buddy-buddy now, and that their rivalry is more like Ryu and Ken's rivalry in street fighter.  I no longer hate Sonic(although there will always be that little part of me that resents him.)

Hey there! It's been a little while since we last chatted.

Sonic was all about that attitude, man! Way past cool! XD Yeah, Sonic might be timeless, but you can still sense some of that 90's attitude streak about him.

To be honest, I used to prefer Sonic over Mario, but I've realised over the years that Mario games are far more polished and have better-executed ideas. If Sonic developers could actually think like the folks at Nintendo (seems unlikely at this stage), I feel that he could have some really darn good outings.

Yup, once the plug was pulled on the Dreamcast, Sega no longer had the same edge to them. The buddy-buddy route was the only sensible one they could take!

Its just like saying from the 70s, Speed Kills. If Sega had the brain cells to put most of it's sonic characters in appropriate games, they could have that kind of success again.

LOL, talking about the whole Blast Processing thing... do you remember this one: Genesis does what Nintendon't... ? XD XD

I've always been a fan of both of them...even from a young age. Most of my school friends at the time would usually only like one or the other...but because I had a Mega Drive/Genesis AND a NES, I could enjoy both Sonic and Mario at all times ^^

Yup, such a cheeky slogan! XD Looks like it came back to bite Sega in the end.

Sadly, I wasn't even born when their rivalry was at its fiercest; I discovered the characters and their games in the mid-2000's and read up about their history once I was a fan for a few years. I envy you!
I have heard about the school playground fights that would occur as a result of Sega vs. Nintendo. Hope it didn't get too rough!

Yep...unfortunately Still...I'll always be a fan of the Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast...even if they were short-lived

Yeah...I grew up liking both companies really, and yes...at times their rivalries WERE fierce!

Well...luckily for me, the only sort of playground fights we had as a result of Sega/Nintendo were verbally joking....
Sort of "Why did you not get [INSERT CONSOLE NAME] instead of [INSERT OTHER CONSOLE NAME] ? It's clearly better!!"

Yep...people who owned a SNES did ask me why I got a Mega Drive (Genesis)... my response was always the opposite of the same question!
That's how it was left most of the time!
