The KT Event did happen but what if a small number of small to medium dinosaurs (plus other creatures) found a safe haven and then later evolved and filling the niches of there old kingdom and when the age of mammals came, they later soon join in and slowly integrated into the new ecosystem thus becoming more diverse as well.

From two-legged Ceratopsians to herbivore, sauropod-like Dromaeosaurs, the possibilities are endless for these living fossils.
