Description This shot represents my evening of shooting in Death Valley National Park in California.

The park is an amazing and incredibly unique landscape. It is the lowest, hottest, and driest place in the United States. Temperature have reached over 130 F, and a basin named Badwater is the lowest spot in North America at 282 feet below sea-level.

I ran into a scorpion while strolling on a "toothbrush" hike near my camping site, earlier in that day we saw a coyote near the visitor center.

Technique:

I knew I wanted to shoot the dunes for the sunset. After waiting for the heat to subside a bit I walked into the dunes without any idea of where to be when the light started to get good. As I was walking I was careful not to put footprints in the sand where a good composition may be. I got to this ridge and was pleased with the texture of the rippling sand so I decided to stop there and wait for the light to get better. When composing the scene, I wanted to keep a bit of sky in the frame, but I tried to keep the texture and color of the sand the focus of the composition. I used a 3 stop GND to hold the highlights in the sky back.

Canon 5D. 17-40mm. 3SS GND filter.

Opinions welcomed.

This is perfect! I love shots of sand like this! Another destination for me! Have you been to Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Utah?? It's beautiful there! [link]

I really love the burnt umber colours and the ripples across the sand and if you stretch your eye across the landscape you will see foot tracks going off into the distance, I could get totally lost in this landscape photo. Brilliance

It is so beautiful! You captured the light, shadows and shapes so well, I am captivated by it....

If it were on the wall of a gallery, I would sit to gaze and dream.

Just lovely......

Honestly... great stuff and very good, careful technique (both before and after the shot) - that much is obvious.

I appreciate that, it's nice when you think a shot through and it turns out the way you envisioned it. We may get lucky and get a few good shots out of luck, but I think the best shots are the deliberate, planned out ones.

Yep I fully agree. It also shows in the photos that a great deal of thought went into each of them.

Very nice, I grew up in southwest TX. which is semi-arid, we only get up to 120. There is sand all around town along with a sandhill statepark just ten miles from town. I love to shoot out there on the dunes. Your shot reminds me very much of home.

I've never been to Texas, I hardly ever get to see dunes so this was a fun night to shoot. If I had some near I think I'd be shooting them often.

You will have to come this way some day then. We have just about every type of environment from swamps to desert, mountains to coastline. If you are ever out this way we can show you plenty of things to take pics of.
