Description So... yeah... There are a few reasons I'm posting this. 1) to help out the members in so that they can always post the best characters they can, and 2) because the amount of Mary Sues that exist in the MLP FIM community is getting waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of hand.

Now to be fair, there was a tutorial like this that I saw a while back, but I haven't been able to find it since. So I decided to make my own :3

Ugh, the grammar in that sentence is terrible. What was I thinking?
I meant "Can an oc ever have a relationship with a canon character?"

I wish you could make one of these for every anime and/or manga. Soooo many OCs with potential go way overboard and end up overpowered and boring.

..Hmm. I might consider joining this group, but here's a pretty odd question. What if there was a Pony mixed with a Gargoyle, who is around the adult age for a pony, yet still doesn't quite have her cutie mark even though she is doing the thing she wants, but not quite for the best or right reason.. Is that OC enough? I'm quite paranoid of being a mary-sue.. and this can't be something someone can randomly come up with unless their INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE.

uh... a pony mixed with anything (especially a creature that isn't in the show) sort of leans more towards the Mary-Sue family than not

I like to stick to those rules myself, since it makes sense.

I want to ask you, how is your opinion in the possibility of a human OC turned into a Pony OC?

Tprinces In reply to DarkOmegaMK2 [2011-11-02 00:54:17 +0000 UTC]

depends on how well they make the transfer, and how strong they are as a character.

[link] No. Alicorn ocs are fine. In this link, there is an alicorn spotted in the show, if you don't believe it, proof in description.

Tprinces In reply to Blanketkitten [2011-10-26 22:01:47 +0000 UTC]

It's still a sort of n00bish thing to do. Also, there are a numerous number of continuity errors all throughout the show, including Scootaloo not having her wings, Celstia's tail coming out her cutie mark, cutie marks themselves vanishing off flanks, the numerous number of clones throughout Ponyville, so on and so forth.

ultimately, alicorns aren't seen as often as the other three races so... I stick with my guns on that one.

Blanketkitten In reply to Tprinces [2011-10-26 22:07:19 +0000 UTC]

It could be as simple as one parent being unicorn and one being a pegasus, as well..

TorturedArtist745 In reply to Blanketkitten [2011-11-02 01:56:50 +0000 UTC]

That's debatable. If it really was that easy to make an alicorn, then they would be very common since interbreeding of the various species of ponies probably happens often considering how much the ponies embrace diversity. The basic consensus among the fanon is that if two different species of ponies were to conceive a foal, then the foal would either inherit the father or mother's species traits, not both. Kind of like Derpy and Dinky. Of course, I'm just speculating.

I know it's a sueish trait to make an OC related to a main character, but what about side characters?

I've always thought of Black Belt (the OC I came up with for that RP) as being related to one of the colts that made fun of Rainbow Dash, having a similar friendship between them to RD and Gilda (I think his name was Hoops or something). Although Hoops wouldn't consider Black Belt lame because of his friends (not that he would want to put up with said friends, he would just hang out with Black Belt when he isn't hanging out with his other friends), I also imagined Black Belt as having some mad scientist tendancies (he likes working with technology when not playing sports or hanging out, and said technology usually explodes when he's done with it, he tends to do this particuarly when he's feeling depressed).

I can also imagine him as being a younger brother to Trixie for his similarly large ego (which results in less of a "I'm the greatest at everything" additude and more of an enthusiastic but foolish "I can do anything" additude).

A very nice tutorial, and the basics of it, the "don't be afraid to give your OC flaws," can be applied to any and all fandoms.

Heh. I was pretty new to the whole MLP FiM fandom, so my friend helped me out because she knows more than I do. I hope Windsong is a fairly balanced character. (Not really a big worry of mine, since I feel confident about my ability to create characters, but still...)

While I certainly agree with the points you brought up, I do think this tutorial does discourage writers from making an alicorn OC. I think a writer has the right to make an alicorn, he/she just can't make a Mary Sue.

As for alicorns that are really powerful. My philosophy is that you can make a character that's super powered, but that character still needs to have limitations, flaws, and (above all else) challenges. I know this is all already pointed out in the tutorial, however the point I'm trying to make is that making super powered characters can be effectively done so long as there's challenge, and in fact it also has the added advantage of allowing the writer leeway to up the ante. For example, if you want your OC alicorn to fight off Discord plus an army of demons while trying to prevent an astroid from crashing into Equestria, so long as the character is sympathetic and struggling with all her strength to fight back, then that would probably be an interesting story. I would read it.

well the target of this tutorial is for people who make these kinds of characters. someone who does create a well rounded character shouldn't be discouraged from making any kind of race :3

Thank you. Just... thank you. There's a reason OC Ponies are often derided, and it's because all too many of them are perfect in every way and have unique qualities that just don't make sense.

Personally, I've never understood why you would *want* your character to be perfect. Where's the conflicts, the challenges, the struggles if you can do *everything* well? Sure, you can and should do some things well; everypony having a special talent is a core tenet of MLP. But anything you can think of (or that helps the plot?) Please.

EEEEXACTLY!
Alicorn OCs are all way, way, WAY overly overdone.

I mean, can't you pick between soaring the sky and doing magic?
If you can't pick, then forget about both the wings and horn, go home and be an earth pony.

Symbols that are explicitly based on the pony's name make for an acceptable reason to give them a symbol unrelated to what they do. Shady from the first generation had sunglasses as her symbol, and Firefly had lightning bolts (as another name for fireflies is lightning bugs).

Abstract symbols are tricky, though.

But I don't think a pony should have a BLAZINGLY PREDICTABLE symbol either unless they're a joke pony... which is often not the case of blazingly predictable ponies in the FiM fandom and canon

WhiteEyedCat In reply to CassidyPeterson [2011-10-17 06:53:18 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CassidyPeterson In reply to WhiteEyedCat [2011-10-17 17:44:04 +0000 UTC]

I mean that if you know what it is without seeing it, that's sad. Two of the ponies in FiM are named Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon - it is damn near impossible to NOT guess what they've got slapped onto their flanks.

I do feel bad for poor Stardust! In my experience Mary-Sue creators feel ignored and distinctly un-special in real life though... hence their special OCs.

But yeah, I try my best to fit into the world I'm trying to fit into instead of being super special awesome.

Mine: Fifi(Feverfew) is an earth pony, has no particularly special markings(her cutie mark resembles that of a flutter pony's, but that's because I thought lots of ponies would have a flower cutie mark and I wanted to make sure it would be a little different) and she runs a tea house... because I like tea. Teeeeaaa.

Awesome tutorial. What I like in this series is that all the ponies have good things and bad things in their personality. That what makes them a "3d characters". That is the most common mistakes people do when creating OC ponies. Thanks for the tutorial.

I was under the impression that canonically, Celestia and Luna were the only alicorns, and were that way because they're not just the rulers of Equestria, but living goddesses to the pony races. So they have to represent them all in their physical forms. Horns, wings, and...whatever earth ponies have that unicorns and pegasi don't. (My headcanon: hard, tough hooves for running.)

Anyway, "How Not To Create A Mary Sue" guides are always awesome. It's just too bad that the people who really need to read and follow them usually won't.

Also: Anyone who gives their pony a radiation warning symbol for a cutie mark, probably has deeper issues than Mary-Sueitis to begin with. They should see a therapist or something.

(My OC pony--I haven't tried to draw her yet or anything--is Snow Shower, a unicorn who makes ice sculptures. Her cutie mark is a swirl of wind with snowflakes. Naturally, winter is her favorite season, and she once tried to prolong it by hiding most of the snow in a cool cave during Winter Wrap-Up and bringing it back out the next day. SEE? IT'S NOT HARD.)

Hey, I have a pony character who is like a fairy alicorn sort of deal, but she has her flaws (like a bad attitude, a prankster personality and a penchant for pissing others off). Is her personality enough to set off the outer mary-sue or would she still come off that way?

also i made her boyfriend/lover/sex slave a fairy pony named after Robin Goodfellow from A Midsummer Night's Dream lol

Tprinces In reply to TheLovelyChemist [2011-10-16 22:06:14 +0000 UTC]

mm... ok, here's a test. ask yourself if they absolutely MUST be a fairy alicorn, and if you can come up with a good, solid answer, yes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheLovelyChemist In reply to Tprinces [2011-10-16 22:49:53 +0000 UTC]

I guess she doesn't need to be, but in my headcannon she doesn't live within the MLP world. To me, she's more a tiny (tinkerbell-size) fairy, who is a pony in form, cuz I like ponies lol. (she's more in gijinka form than anything in this headcannon but I like her as a pony too)

If she DID end up living within the MLP world, I'd probably take away her horn and make her part of a race of mythical ponies that are attendants and advisers to the Equestrian royalty and live secluded in the forest. Kind of like the Poncles in Okami. (OH MY GOD THAT WAS SO UNORIGINAL UHUHUUUUUU ;;n;; )

So, yes and no, depending on where she lives.
