The Technobots have always been my favorite combiner team, and you really got the characters down. Great character moment for Scattershot especially, nice to see his behavior come back to bite him in the skitplate. Great piece!

Fun.

Critique: Wish the last panel had a more upright orientation. Seeing Scattershot upside-down made it difficult to see the full extent of the damage he sustained.

I've gotta disagree there. If it were "upright" is could be mistakenly assumed that he was standing up. This angle really captures the fact that he is lying in a heap on a table. It's a far more dramatic angle.

DreamPen In reply to Tramp-Graphics [2011-05-03 13:28:55 +0000 UTC]

I don't think so. The loose pose he's in is strong enough to tell the reader he's lying down, not to mention the missing left leg. Besides, it doesn't have to be perfectly upright (slight angle left or right, or even up to 90 degrees to either side)- just not upside down so the human brain doesn't get confused.

Tramp-Graphics In reply to DreamPen [2011-05-03 14:38:53 +0000 UTC]

I certainly wasn't confused by it, and apparently no one else was either. The oblique "upside down" angle is a far more dramatic angle than an upright one or even one at 90°. I've used similar angles in some of my work as well. It is also used in cinema and TV. It is because it is an "uncomfortable" and "disconcerting" angle that pushes the tension, drama, and dynamics of the scene. It's good composition.

DreamPen In reply to Tramp-Graphics [2011-05-04 14:51:54 +0000 UTC]

I humbly and respectfully disagree. It doesn't need additional drama because of how beat up Scattershot was. That alone, especially given his high demands, had more than enough impact for the reader to make any other tricks of the camera unnecessary.

By using an uncomfortable and disconcerting angle, the shot takes away from the focus on Scattershot and the revelation of how damaged he is and how hypocritical his standards are. As he is- armor shattered, lying in pieces, missing parts and limbs- Scattershot makes for a powerful figure of the risks and costs of war.

Even where the design work and portrayal of a Cybertronian is skillfully spot-on, whether classic G1 cartoon or comics to the more exotic live action movie designs, the form will always be alien and strange compared to what we human beings recognize as the body of a sentient creature. Any time we look at an Autobot or Decepticon, there's a process of analysis and recognition: this block here is a foot, this cylinder here is a forearm, this accessory here is part of his chest design, etc. Even for fans used to seeing them, there is still an act of comprehension of their appearance.

This process is rendered more complicated by deviations and "inconsistencies" in the design by war damage as the person not only has to understand what the character should normally looks like but account for violent changes as well.

Thus, my perspective: by making the camera angle portray an upside-down Scattershot, the process of recognition is complicated by another layer of comprehension. This slows down the appreciation of the shattered and prone image of poor Scattershot.

But story-wise, it should NOT slow down because the last panel is the denouement of the story and has to be quick and to the point in order to make the readers go "Oh... I get it." The story should not drag on after the climax (the revelation it was a hologram). It should be short and sweet, hitting as quickly and as hard as Bludgeon performing Metallikato.

Tramp-Graphics In reply to DreamPen [2011-05-04 15:20:42 +0000 UTC]

And that is where we disagree. A straight on, upright shot is static, and as a result tends to be boring. This is particularly true if the character is just standing there or lying there. The change in angle to a diagonal, and even more importantly, an inverted diagonal, creates a more dynamic shot for what is otherwise a static pose. The change in angle does not take away from Scattershot, just the opposite. The only issue with the layout of that panel is the fact that it goes directly corner-to-corner. A better angle would have been to tilt it just a little more off the corners.

And, like I said, you seem to be the only one who was even remotely confused by the shot. I caught on straight away. There was no "lag" in comprehension or recognition.

Wonderful art, and it's a nice twist ending. So good work all round! Still though, Scattershot's kind of a pompous jerk isn't he?
