Description Okay, so first a disclaimer: I am not left-handed.

I had to learn how to knit left-handedly in order to teach my mother, who wanted to learn to knit (and is very, very left-handed). I thought since I was already doing that, I might as well add a tutorial as well.

So this part 1 of my planned series of knitting tutorials for the lefties out there. Next will be the knit stitch, then the purl stitch. I might do some stuff on reversing lace and cables as well.

Part 2--The Knit Stitch: [link]

Hope you enjoy this, and that it is helpful! And if you have any questions, please ask!

Wow. You are amazing! Learn to knit left-handed for your mother!
That is so so nice!

I am left-handed, but never learned to knit the other way round – our teacher never realized that there were 5 (!) left-handers in our class, so we just knitted how she told us to (right-handed).
After 4 years she realized we are left-handed and was stunned. XD

I hope your mother enjoys knitting!

welll... for those who have left-handed and right-handed in their learner-teacher duets... why don't you try the German way of knitting?? there, both hands are equally required, and there is absolutely no inversion in any way.... my grandma is right handed, I am left handed, but she taught me, we often knit together, and we can finish each other work in case we need to do it quickly...

For many left-handed people that's a great way of learning to knit, and I definitely recommend it. I do both German (or continental or picking or whatever you want to call it) and English (or throwing), and frankly, Continental is better for a lot of things!

In fact, that was how I first tried to teach my mom--but she couldn't do it at all. Though both hands are required, the right hand still has the 'dominant' motion, and my mom is extremely 'handed'. Some people have more fine motor skills, I think, in both hands, but for her it's all concentrated in the left.

So this tutorial is for people like her, who might have tried continental knitting and still found it too right-handed. For others (like you), continental is, I agree, a lot easier!

wow, I've learnt many things today: new names for the method I use (didn't know it had several names) and that I am not that left-handed, after all...

by the way, I find your tutorials very well done,... the pics are very clear, like in my favorite knitting book, it's really agreabel to follow

LOL My mom can't teach me because she's right handed. So...at this rate, I'll never learn.

That's too bad, knitting is super fun ^^. Hopefully you'll find this tutorial helpful though, and if you have any questions about knitting please ask me. I'll also be posting another tutorial for lefties later today.

LOL I'm right handed though, so lefties won't help me.

Oh sorry, I didn't understand your post. If you're looking for right handed help, there's a ton of great tutorials online.

I'm not left handed either, but learned how to knit this way because my mom is, and I had to teach her. Some left-handed knitters do knit right-handedly, but she is VERY left-handed (as I assume your friend is) and couldn't do it.

I'm saving this.

This will be useful for when I inevitably learn to knit (for I already crochet, have knitting needles, and I'm left-handed).

Thanks for the fav! I learned to knit first, then crochet, but one does seem to eventually lead to the other.

"And if it hurts, it's because he cannot understand
That (there has been) a thorn in your heart for too long.
And if it hurts, it's because he cannot see it
While your smile finally fades away."
