BEGINNINGS 1998 - 2000

GRIMLOCK began icon life in the form of his alternate (and much more impressive) head design. I have lost count of how many icons needed colour reapplication after the monitor fiasco of spring 1998, but I know he was one of the ones I did under those conditions, and a pretty rapid assignment at that. I had fun putting him together, not just because of his fairly uncomplicated design, but also because I simply like the look. As I recall, all of his second-season appearances employed this visage. I changed fairly little about him in 2000, but what I did alter made a difference -- he went from looking almost a little sorrowful to suitably determined.
SECOND WIND 2007 - 2011

Screen captures were a very real help in upping the GRIMLOCK ante. From WAR OF THE DINOBOTS to DESERTION OF THE DINOBOTS, I had many angles from which to choose. The colour process was interesting because his head is essentially black. How to give the impression of shading? Easily enough: make him more or less a light charcoal. I had to decide on a specific take on this design, though -- even the TOEI episodes, which generally featured him in this way, came with minor variations, like the spot of red you can see in his 2007 "mohawk," shown in DINOBOT ISLAND. I eventually settled on DESERTION OF THE DINOBOTS as my template, right down to the colouring.
