Description Of course, the majority of Goths are unique in their style and music preferences. However, within the subculture there are certain "types" of Goth with particular characteristics. And it can be fun to classify them. Naturally, classifications for each "type" vary from person to person, so you may disagree with what I say here!

My parents are this type in denial. Just look at my Dad's business: [link]

Lots (if not most) of the customers are this sort, and they're always interesting people to meet!

I think medieval rock bands like In Extremo, Saltatio Mortis and the like should be mentioned here.

I'm not sure I'd say they're interested in medieval history, but rather medieval FANTASY. Β I'm a student in medieval studies and have met MANY medievalists. Β I've also met many medieval goths in my trips to places such as Renaissance/Medieval Faires. Β The two are hardly ever the same. Β Every year, at the International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo Michigan, there are people who show up (often poorly informed medieval goths) in "medieval" clothes, expecting a sort of convention or faire. Β It's actually a bunch of scholars in professional attire talking about academia regarding the Middle Ages.

There are certainly goths who are medieval historians. Β But they aren't medieval goths.

That said, there is nothing wrong with medieval goth, and I actually find the style quite charming. Β So long as they have a clear understanding that their aesthetic is based on fantasy rather than actual history.Β

question: would the medievals be typically interested in writers of the era similar to the victorian archtype?Β  Β

Lol, so swift and hillariously written, yet informative.

One couple I know and who got married recently - they are not quite goth but something like medieval metalheads - they really have garagoyles in their livingroom.

Many groups and sub-groups of Goth; I find my Goth side is a eclectic mixture of most of these types. I, Goth

Me right there. Though a few years ago, I could never afford expensive accessories and the like. I was really plain. Could you make a Goth Type: Simple Goth? or Plain Goth? Just for those out there that either choose to be "plain" or simply can't afford much?

Probably the closest to myself.
Though I prefer Viking and Norse culture to that of Medieval England. Combine this with the Hippy Goth and throw in the obsession with bone and stone of the Tribal Goth and we've got a new breed!
Viking Goth.

Very cool. I know a lot of these. I would include myself, but only on the days when I'm doing ECS (Empire of Chivalry and Steel) or COMSOD (Company of Masters of the Science of Defence). Otherwise I'm something of a rivethead. Either way, I definitely have a sword fixation... I cannot wait to finally have my own Federschwert.

I'm looking forward to seeing the ones who go back to the *real* Goths, the barbarians from what is now Germany who the Romans were never able to conquer. Those who marched to the gates of Rome under Alaric (but not those who marched to the gates of Rome under Attila; those were Huns... )... those who Italian medieval architects named the Germanic cathedral style after because they thought it was barbaric...
