Description
Of course, the majority of Goths are unique in their style and music preferences. However, within the subculture there are certain "types" of Goth with particular characteristics. And it can be fun to classify them. Naturally, classifications for each "type" vary from person to person, so you may disagree with what I say here!My parents are this type in denial. Just look at my Dad's business: [link]
Lots (if not most) of the customers are this sort, and they're always interesting people to meet!

I do enjoy your works.
In Scandinavia, people who may look a bit like 'hippy goths' are all but pacifistic hippies, though. Theres a gothi' subculture thing with roots in swedish nordic black metal that at some point fused with new-agers on a nordic religion trip. I guess you can throw them into the goth lot too.
I'm not to sure if they exist in vinland too?
Useally they have beards and dreadlocks - marelocks its called from ancient norse - sometimes full of glass beads. The thors hammer around the neck is a must, though some wear coins and other regalia too. When they arent gathered around a fire, drinking and eating flesh to honour the gods, while cursing conformist christiandom and retelling myths and stories, they may be encountered at any gothic concert that has just a tiny splash of powermetal or heavyness in it: They are easy to spot out as most other goths, despite the metal or hippy goth, feels a bit unsafe around them.
They arent as much a part of the normal powermetal hardgrindcore scene, as they useally dislike the black laether and inverted cross-things just as much as they appreciate neo-goth-folk bands with a hint of classic. They tend to wear a bit baggy and almost always trashed green or blue cargostyled street pants, as well as a rather large long hooded sweatshirt, and or armed sloppy t-shirts. - As seen in the matrix' real world.
They blend into the goth scene with their facination of sullen elmtrees, black birds, gravemounds, ice and snow and skullcups; like most romantic goths. And ritualism shared with the hippy goth.
Every clique of these beings have at least one wiser, quieter more robeclad monkish fellow who partly leads and partly hides behind the others, and who harwest revenation from his followers with his sageish knowlegde and great storytelling abillities...
are there a chance that you will include these sometime...? [link]
Love

Oh I kind of know what you mean...
I'm always a bit dubious about including Black Metal type people with Goths, they really don't seem to like getting labled as Goth.
But if enough people mention them, I may well include them. They're certainly on the "possible" list.

Finally someone else has heard of Loreena McKennit! I have two of her CDs but was rather upset to find nothing about her or Clannard on the internet AT ALL
This is a great series, and it's lovely to see something that is unbiased for once. Keep up the great work!

I'm suprised about that, I thought Loreena McKennit was fairly well known, especially because all the people into Celtic, New Age and Folk tend to know about her as well as Goths.
Thank you very much!

Hehe well I live in a goth dry zone. You've got to travel to the nearest capital city until you come across one, there are more pagans and far more "emos" here. It's quite strange actually, and quite sad

Renaissance Faires are GREAT I love your music suggestions, as always
I had a drama teacher that LOVED Loreena McKennit and Medieval Baebes
Just wondering, what kind of goth type would you suggest "Fields of the Nephilim" for...? Is there such things as a "western" goth or something similar...? (I'm thinking, something with the feel of Stephen King's Dark Tower, FOTN, some things from the Ghost Rider movie and all that sexeh desert wasteland stuff.....or maybe I'm just rambling on...hah...
)

Fields of the Nephilim is quite Trad, I would say, since they're part of the 80s scene. Yes, I've definitely heard of "Western Goth" and it's on my list of possible goth types to do! There's a big link between the early goth scene and "Western" iconography and themes - The Cult and The Birthday Party have kind of Western leanings in their image and music, as does Theatre of Tragedy (their song Do You Believe in the West World springs to mind). And then there's the link between "Western Goth" and the "Gothabilly" scene too.

Well, he did cover NIN's "Hurt," plus both him and Alien Sex Fiend have done songs called "I Walk The Line" (if that's relevant to anything!), so I suppose he has some tenuous goth links.

Trellia In reply to AriMaxwell [2007-02-06 10:04:57 +0000 UTC]
Just from observing people in gothy hot spots
Well, that depends on how you narrowly you define "types" (if you believe in different types at all...) I'm defining them as narrowly as possible, because it's mainly just an excuse to draw as many gothy fashion styles as possible
