Age: 5 years
Gender: Male
Orientation: Heterosexual

Color: White with Black spots (including ticking on the legs and underneath the topcoat), and slight discoloration in his Undercarriage due to laying in dirt and hardly ever getting a bath (maybe once a year).
Defining Features: Mismatched patterns on either side of body. Long back and short legs, fluffy ears, HUGE fluff tail.
Personality:
Saul is a 4.5 year old Stabyhoun, which is a breed that was originally bred to be "a versatile breed, used on farms as both a hunter and a watchdog" (UKC).
Old Soul || Self-Relying || Non-Confrontational || Stuffer
Old Soul: Fits right at home with the Farm Dogs Faction. Saul is an "old soul" in a young body. He clings to traditional belief systems that he claims has kept balance for centuries so why change them? He knows the farm life well enough that if something works for the group, it's best left untouched. Always up early, finishes chores in a timely manner. After he finishes, he will generally do more than what he is bid. Saul believes his sole purpose is to work (whether it be on the farm or in the hunting field). His morals and values coincide with the traditional ways of life, whether it be in courting or in his work ethics. All he wants is a simple life of hard work and relative peace and justice, and he believes that this way of life will reap natural benefits. Saul is definitely not one to rebel, unless it is something he outwardly opposes, and even then, he chooses his battles. Generally will get along with dogs older than him, he considers even some dogs that are his age to be still too immature.
Self-relying: Due to his past, being shifted from place to place as a young dog, Saul tends not to seek out alliances. That's not to say he won't have friends, because he will have them. But he truly believes he's better off on his own. He is no stranger to being let down by someone he put faith in. So, in his maturity, Saul decided to rely only on himself. When it comes down to it, no one can help him but himself, otherwise, he's not good enough. His owner only keeps Saul for his hunting/guarding abilities, and as long as Saul upholds his part of the deal he's golden. He'll get the basics: food, shelter, etc.- without any strings attached of being a "companion pet". Saul really doesn't want a relationship with a human necessarily any more than that. Very similarly to relationships with dogs, it takes a long time to get past acquaintance with Saul. And he'll never ask for help, because that means he failed on his own.
Non-Confrontational: Saul is submissive. He would be the first one to "roll over" when a confrontation arises. Saul knows due to his stature and previous injuries, that he wouldn't stand much of a chance in an all-out brawl. As previously said, he prefers to choose his battles. And for the most part, Saul tries to keep the peace between the dogs, as he knows the one thing that can disrupt life in the Farm Dog Faction is too strong of opinions leading to a disagreement. Either he will actively try to keep the peace, or he will just ignore it and let it play on- it's not his responsibility, as long as he can still do what he needs to do (work). Doesn't pick sides in a disagreement, claims that it's not his place to be judging other dogs' problems.
Stuffer: "Stuffer" simply meaning that he hides his emotions. Most dogs are fairly keen on hiding what pains them, and Saul is no exception. Before coming to Canidale, the two-year-old Saul got a fairly bad injury from a horse kick (he claims it wasn't his fault, but no one knows for sure), his owner at that time had no idea Saul even was hurt. That was until he fell lame in his hind quarters. After trips to the vet, Saul regained most of his mobility. There are times that his injury flares up, but, of course, he tries not to let it hinder his work. On normal days, he walks with a slightly noticeable altered gate, on really good days he can run and hunt as well as any other, and on his bad days, it can get to the point that standing up is a difficult chore. His biggest fear is to not be able to work, the fear of being immobile is a real fear that Saul has to deal with (As his flare-ups have gotten increasingly more often). The effects of his injury has become increasingly worse as he ages, he hides it, but it will be noticeable to his closer friends. Besides injury pains, Saul also hides his other emotions. However, the one emotion he shows the most is irritability. Especially with naive and immature dogs- he doesn't have a whole lot of tolerance for them. Saul believes that the young have to learn that their life isn't about themselves, but about what they can contribute. He is willing to share his traditional values with youth that will listen respectfully.
Pre-Group History: Born: Rowan Creek's Wayfarer (call name Saul), to two show dog and performance parents. He was the single male out of his litter, with 4 other female siblings. He stayed with his breeder's family until he was six months, which at that point the breeder began weeding out which puppies were bound to be show dogs. Saul showed great potential conformation-wise, but his temperament was off. Now, his parents, as stated before were also performance dogs. So, Saul's breeder just thought that he was just more prone to performance than conformation. However, his breeder pushed him to be good at both. He excelled in field work, but he hated the show dog world. His parents coaxed him and tried to make him understand that being a show dog wasn't a bad thing. They would say things like "Look at your sisters, they love showing!" But it was really no use, Saul wouldn't give in.
At 6 1/2 months old, Saul was entered into his first show (in the puppy group), much to his dismay; and he misbehaved. He jumped on the judge, wound up the other other dogs in the ring, pulled at the lead, barked and whined. Anything he could do to protest. Sauls' breeder was so embarassed and furious at her pups' behavior, that he pawned him off to the next home that would take him. Deciding after his first attempt that he was too high of drive for the show ring (mostly just out of her own anger.)
Those that took him in next, was a family with 5 children that ranged from toddler to teen. The parents decided taking Saul in would be good to teach their children responsibility. They thought he was such fun at first, but soon lost interest in him, and he was mostly kept outside. With nothing to do, he was destructive, Saul felt he had to keep busy. He also had the tendency to escape and roam, which was especially bad for an intact young male. His family had him less than a year by the time they gave him up.
This time, a proper home was found, at a ranch that mainly had horses. Saul's new owner was an up and coming rodeo star, who did spend a lot more time with his horses than with Saul. However, that didn't bother him too much as he had fairly free range of the ranch's property. Even though he still lacked a job, he tried to make up for that by keeping the horses in check. The horses mostly put up with the dog (who was now almost 2), but, when a new, big, yearling colt came into the ranch's keep, problems arose. Saul was upset that the new horse wouldn't listen and when he tried to put the horse in his place, Saul was kicked in his hind quarters. It would've been worse if Saul had been slower, but luckily he escaped with his life. His injury, however, was debilitating. His owner, the rodeo star, decided the best place for him was off the ranch. He brought the broken Saul to the vet, and never came back.
Saul spent 5 months between his time at the vet's and in the shelter. Since the vets had cared for him and rehabilitated him (mostly), their connections with the shelter is what kept him from being euthanized since the shelter was a high-kill shelter. Sitting in the kennel all day was horrific, Saul would've rather died. It was loud, damp, and with no consistency since his kennel mates kept disappearing. Yet he remained, and he didn't understand. Saul knew his life amounted to more than this. He ached to be out, and lost all outlook on life. That was, until, his savior came. (And it wasn't an exaggeration). A middle aged lady came and adopted him, she was mostly looking for a companion, but also a dog that enjoyed the outdoors and also wasn't just a couch potato. Saul fit the description a little too much, but regardless, the lady took him home to Canidale. The lady, Mrs. Katrina, brought Saul home and presented him to her husband, Mr. Greg. Mr. Greg already owned several hunting dogs, and was reluctant to accept Saul. So the pack was separate, Mr. Greg had the working hounds, and Mrs. Katrina had Saul. She was the first owner that actually cared for Saul, and in turn, Saul cared for her. It was his duty to protect and provide for her, he stuck to her side regardless of any distractions. He was finally a well-mannered dog that had a job. However, it was too good to be true. Mrs. Katrina fell ill with cancer and passed away when Saul was 3 years old. Mr. Greg would've dumped Saul back at the shelter if it wasn't for Mrs. Katrina who pleaded that he kept Saul. And slowly, a partnership formed, between Saul and Mr. Greg. Saul was Mr. Greg's only connection to Mrs. Katrina. Mr. Greg begin to notice the potential of the stocky Stabyhoun as a working dog and began to introduce him to working. Saul thrived and learned quickly. Finally having purpose in life. His skill set by 4.5 months old were: Trailing game, flushing, water retrieval, and guarding. He quickly took to whatever Mr. Greg wanted him to do, and, thus, Saul's place in Canidale has been secure.

Other: I believe he sounds like Matthew MacFadyen (aka Mr. Darcy) in Pride and Prejudice. c: He would be without the british accent, but his mannerisms, respectfulness, and deepness of his voice are all similar. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R-Zg5…
