See? This is the kind of amazing thing that deserves to be a DD, not some stupid photo.

I love how you made this look like a screenshot from a movie trailer. May I use this in an article I'm working on? It's about reality and fiction and how it gets more and more difficult to recognize what's real and what's not, it's for my semiotics classes. I would love to use your picture as one of the many examples, but obviously, I need your approval before doing anything

Thanks for your time, I'll wait for your response

Thank you!

O.o that is a butt-ton of layers. I think the maximum I've ever had in a single piece was maybe all of ten. But then when I'm layering I'm usually drawing all the components myself, not cut-and-pasting, like this, so I guess I don't really need all that many layers, either.

The merging of one piece to the next in this is excellent. Barring a few small parts that pop unusually, the whole of the image looks credible as a photograph of actual events. You even incorporated depth of field, granting aperture blur like a real camera would have done to a real life image like this one. Good work.

Wow, this is amazing! You used 52 layers just for the soldier in the foreground? I would love to see the break down of that if you don't mind. I think it would only showcase this peice more if you had a quick video that just displayed all the layers building on itself one by one.

Excellent photomanipulation.
I have one question, as a matter of interest, working with so many layers on an image of that resolution must eat resources like mad: What are the specs of the rig you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tri5tate In reply to Maffoo [2012-10-06 18:11:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you're right, it eats resources like ****. Actually I don't have the latest rig, I'm using a PC I built by myself back in 2009 which runs a core i7 2,6 ghz processor (Nehalem, the first generation I think), 12GB of RAM, a Geforce 560ti and some 7200rpm HDDs. RAM is extremely important, so is processor. This project was one of my heaviest, so it almost ate up all my RAM as soon as I opened the project towards the end. So for my next big project I'll probably upgrade my rig and maybe put in 24GB of RAM (or atleast 16).
Thanks for the comment btw!

Hey, you're welcome - thanks for taking the time to give me the specs.
Upgrade-time is looming and it's good to be able to see what other people are using.

Thanks once again all for the nice comments! About that breakdown, I'll try to manage to it tomorrow or in the upcoming week, and then put it all on a PDF file or something since I don't have a website or blog yet.
And yes, there's 52 layers on the first soldier. Only the patch which says "A steady stream of madness" have around 15 layers. Then include the goggles, helmet and the details on it (the helmet is put together from like 4-5 different pictures to match the angle), the balaclava, my own signature on his arm, and the camera on his helmet.
To make this easier, I'll try (but not promise) to put together a breakdown as soon as I can.
