Description
Alrighty, we are being edjumacational this week. Allow me to fill you with the edjumication. Not the most hilarious, but I figured it's something that's part of my daily life that is just so unique to Japan (not sure if anywhere else does this).And I must say, I do miss the days of throwing all my trash in one bin AH (and not all plastics are plastics, only SOME are. Also Styrofoam counts.)
Part 2 on Wednesday!
Enjoy!

Its a little different in america now, we have four bins, 3 are recyclable but all together its:
Green waste(like organic)
Cans and bottles
Paper
and then waste left
This is interesting though and funny how you cover it up but probably better than here where their in bins that raccoons can get into.

Huh, I'd think the bins would be harder to get into, since all this is is a net and some plastic bags under it. If the crows try, they can totally get trash out ^_^;;

Ah I suppose that true the bins are just easily knock over by raccoons which is the main adversary of trash keeping XD

Where I am, we have:
Blue bin: Cans, glass bottles, tins, etc.
Yellow Bag: Cardboard, packaging, paper
Blue Bag: Newspaper, other kinds of paper
Garbage Can: Non-recyclables
And on some occasions you can have food waste bags depending on where you live and compost which normally is a green garbage can.
Mmmyup, so much sorting! owo

WHOA, lucky you, you get bags for paper! We have to tie it up with a string >_< I wonder if that's because of the rural area where we live? Not sure where you live though ^_^;;

Wow, I bet that can get frustrating at times!
Hmmm... maybe, I live in Vancouver and all of the areas have different garbage guidelines depending on where you live and what you live in |D
Garbage and recycling is so complicated!

Hmmm... I wonder if the bag color varies on where you are in Japan? Where I live, we have yellow for burnables, blue for non-burnables, and then PET bottles and cans have to be taken to your local grocery store.

Ah, yes, Pet bottles we have to take to the grocery store too, but cans we can take out on special days. Huh, yellow. The two places I've seen trash bags (Aichi and Kobe... and I think Hamamatsu too) use red and white burnable bags.

Our cans go in with our non-burnables in the blue bags which go out every 2 weeks. Hmmm... maybe it's something to do with the part of Japan? I live in Ibaraki prefecture so...

We have yellow bags for burnable trash in Niigata too (^w^).
For non-burnables it's a clear bag.
For all other recyclables (including PET bottles and cans) you can use any clear plastic bag. Or you can take them to the grocery store if you don't want to wait for the right day to put them out to be picked up.

Okay, depending on where you are in the UK the available recycling bins differ.
Where I live at home in Lancashire we have:
Green - Cardboards/Papers/Vegetation/Wood
Blue - Metals, Glasses, Plastics
Black - Non Recyclables
Where I live for Uni in Leicester we have:
Green - RECYCLE *ALL* THE THINGS
Black - Non-Recyclables
And for both sets the different colours have different days, but we don't need a calender because it is always the same days every week.

Yeah, here each area can be different, but I'm pretty sure the types of trash are pretty uniform. Bigger cities have more options, I think ^_^

This was similar to the sorting system I encountered in Norway... sort of.
Green was for foodstuff, blue was for plastic, white/grocery bags is for paper, and there was a basket for glass.
I was really confused where to put milk cartons (which were cardboard except for the spout) and bread bags (which were paper aside from a plastic window), but since the floor was populated by almost entirely exchange students, there was almost no difference between what went where. Everyone just put things there willy-nilly.
And then when it was my turn to take out the trash I found they all went to the same dumpster! I'm not sure what the process is after that, but it seemed rather pointless... (at least for my floor)
(Also there were no garbage disposals so our sink got clogged.)

TriaElf9 In reply to AmeUmi36 [2013-04-01 00:51:49 +0000 UTC]
Ah yes, our sink has to have a little bag in it to catch things, which we throw out each week. Having grown up with a garbage disposal that just chewed up everything, that was super weird for me >_<
Yeah, the plastics here don't apparently include shopping bags, those are apparently burnable >_>

Yeah it's getting complicated in CA too. There's recyclable (blue bin) and there's certain plastics that don't count and styrofoam doesn't count as recyclable. Some things in each area are different because I know some don't allow green glass for some reason. Then there's compost ( green bin) which allows for any organic matter or plant matter since some areas don't want meat going in there. Then finally the good old trash (black bin) which is basically anything that doesn't go in the other two bins. So long as you don't toss recyclables in trash or things they ban from trash like medical waste, batteries, or electronics you're good, if you do though you can be fined in some areas. Thankfully trash day is one day a week here and we have giant bins to keep animals out. Those nets I've seen in Japan would not stop a Raccoon. XD I can only imagine the areas that have monkeys.
I find burnables and non-burnables interesting. So they don't recycle paper in Japan?

TriaElf9 In reply to MarrinWolf [2013-04-01 00:30:28 +0000 UTC]
Oh they recycle Paper, it just doesn't go out in a bag. you have to tie it all up with a string and it only goes out every other week, twice a month.
Yeah, the burnables/non-burnables was one of those really interesting things I'd never seen before.

Green = General/non recycle stuff
blue - recyclable stuff (plastic paper, tins etc)
Brown = Compost/vegatation

ahah, compost and vegetation ^_^ In Japan, if you are actually lucky enough to have a yard, or garden, you just tend to burn it all yourself.

It's a little similiar to what we have in the UK - we have four bins, 3 are recyclables:
Black - metal
Green - paper
Blue: plastics
Then we have the normal bin as well.
Your system sounds tougher though
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TriaElf9 In reply to Aitwo [2013-03-31 15:19:03 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's much like the states, though I think it just goes "Regular trash" and "recyclables" but it's been a while since I've been home ^_^;;
The toughest part is figuring out which trash goes where, since some plastics aren't meant to go in the plastic bin. Plus, if the plastic has any food on it, we have to clean it off. Perhaps it's the American in me, but I'm not all that thrilled about washing my trash in my sink...

My dad got told off by some random Japanese guy when he was visiting me in Japan because the garbage wasn't sorted properly when he took it out, so the man sat there and helped sift through it all with my dad, neither of them able to actually understand one another's language, and my dad not entirely sure what was going on
