We call it hoarfrost....but that seems to be an archaic or at least regional term. Β And it is magical to see the entire area covered and sparkling in the sunlight. Β

Here we call it hoarfrost...but most never heard that term. Β It doesn't happen here often except for the last few years. Β

I witnessed it many, many years ago when I visited Montana. They called it hoarfrost as well, so I've actually heard that term before!

I was watching The Weather Channel yesterday and their meteorologist referred to it as "rime frost" rather than hoarfrost, and then proceeded to explain that it was freezing fog. Why are there so many different names for the same thing?!

Hoarfrost is old English in origin and rime frost is middle English. Β The preference must be some kinda regional thing. Β
