First of all i would like to say i'm not an expert or Connoisseur in Art, i haven't even studied it and i'm not even thinking of doing so, but i spend a lot of time watching art so maybe this could be useful, the vision you had is 3.5, Originality 3 because it have a form of a quintessential ghost specter, replacing the staff with a lance, but i have to say that i liked that lance a lot! and the Spartan-like helmet, also the spirit is of light, The technique is beautiful and for that i give a 4, personally i like digital enhanced background, and i don't know why but i didn't felt a steamy flow in the spirit's aura, other than that i liked it, also the illumination in the shield could be better (not that i know how to do it, i appreciate a lot your talent and would pay a lot of money for having it, i know is not possible xD) finally, i had a good impact, at first glimpse i found it refreshing and heroic, and instantly made me wonder about the story behind this artwork, for that ill give it a 4. Keep up the good work i'm actually watching all your works because i think you have potential for greatness :3.

I'm torn on this one. It's rendered well with lots of detail and flourishes, but I don't see it working as a character.

The very first thing it lacks is a good silhouette. i'm not talking about the iconography of the helmet, shield and weapon, I'm talking about personality. Even the most loyal rule-abiding guard will express as such by stance and posture - and as a work of art instead of real metal armor, you can feel free to push that silhouette pretty far without worrying about losing your audience. More importantly this is for a game, so from the camera you may only have 30 px tall at any given point to convey who we're looking at. You can't use armor detail to do that. Silhouette first.

This also does not work mechanically. As an animator, I worry about being able to deform this mesh in a reasonably believable way. Right now, your character can't bend at the waist or neck at all. Nor can he bend his elbow further than he does in this picture. Even if he's a jousting character on horseback, I question his ability to do his job.

After silhouette and before detail you have to define contrasts. This is the "inner silhouette" that defines character features at a middle distance. Right now, the highest points of contrast are his belt and cloak, followed by a tiny bit of gold on the chest piece. Everything else is white on white on whiter white. When I step away from my monitor, I lose sight of all the form you worked so hard to make.

The solution to this is multi-fold: Add more colored dividing lines, gold and red, to define the major body parts as well as the contour of the face guard. Clearly define the specularity of cloth compared to metal. Then, give the awesome over-bright spirit light some color as it falls off. Color first from its own temperature, and second from lens effect (human eye will bloom red, different cameras will flare various amounts of rainbow refraction).

The end result will be the same character, but told with story and clarity and in much greater dynamic range. And clarity is the big one, here. No matter whether this character will be animated in paint or in polys, your job in creating characters for games is to be precise enough that other artists have no question as to how to present them for you down the pipeline.

And while you revisit the details stage, consider telling us why he's a spirit instead of a mortal man. Was he a guard before he died? If so, how did he die? Why did he remain at his post? Is there a sentimental reason he's attached to his shiny armor? If he wasn't a guard before, why is he one now? What binds him to this duty, or otherwise convinces him to serve some master? Tell your stories visually and watch your character designs really take off.

For further character design help, I refer you to my colleague a.deviantart.net/avatars/s/e/s… " alt=" " title="SecondKin"/>.

In short, this character is an awesome idea that needs further refinement.
