Description The SC-3 is one of the earlier ground based military robots. It also was the first walking robot to achieve any sort of popularity, as previous models were clumsy and just plain stupid. The SC-3 is used primarily as a scout robot. They could theoretically be capable of fighting, but the robots have trouble distinguishing between friend and foe.

They are surprisingly nimble, using inertia and their balancing tails to stay upright. To stand still they drop onto their ankles (see the lowest joint).

Before being used the robots are given some programming and then spend the better part of a year being "taught" by a trainer. The robots are programmed to work for their trainers praise, and seem surprisingly like dogs in temperment. They sometimes even seem to exhibit devotion, and one robot even suffered a massive system failure after it's trainer was killed by a mine. However, some people scoff at the idea of a caring robot and claim that the failure was merely coincidence.

Just some fun speculation. I was partly inspired by the recent DARPA Grand Challenge where a robotic car ran 200 miles on it's own, and some robots that used dynamic balancing systems on TV. I wonder if a robot could really care about someone, or if they could only mimic it. But then again I wonder if my cat cares about me or only mimics it for food. I just really like the idea of robots running and playing and begging for praise like dogs.

Done in pen then colored in photoshop. I wanted to experiment with some new texture techniques.

cool, this is a really original design. the description is really impressive too. i'd love to see a full story or comic from you (sorry, that came out sounding like an art prof. for some reason. oh well, gold stars)

looks like it might have trouble with soft ground...but very cool drawing nonetheless.

Thanks! The robot only tiptoes on solid ground, in muddy areas or unsteady ground it walks on its ankles. That's why it has treads on the front of the "foot."

It's cool that you thought of that. Was the robot inspired by Metal Gear Ray, by any chance?

I didn't realize it until after you mentioned it, but I do see the influence now. Metal Gear mechs are cool.

Very good work and interesting background on the robot. Do you write much?

I don't write much aside from reports, I'm not all that great at long narratives but I do love to write smaller snippets of stories.

Well I found your small snippet very engrossing. It was so well thought out for being so short. Great read.
