Description The War and Peace Nebula (NGC 6357), also known (more mundanely) as the Lobster Nebula, is an emission nebula located in the constellation of Scorpius some 8000 light years away. Like many other emission nebulae, the War and Peace Nebula is a region of rapid star formation. However, it sets itself apart by being home to some of the most massive stars known to astronomers. At its heart, which can be distinguished by the strong blue glow, lies the star cluster Pismis 24, which has several stars each exceeding the mass of a hundred suns.

This was photographed in the narrowband Hubble palette, assigning ionised hydrogen to green, oxygen to blue, and sulfur emissions to red. Like many of my other images, narrowband imaging allows me to capture this object from my home window, under a bright city sky.

Imaging details:
Location: Singapore
Date(s): June, July & August 2019
Telescope: APM LZOS 130 at f/4.5
Camera: Atik 16200M, Baader & Chroma Filters
Mount: Losmandy G11/G2
Exposure (min): SII - 60, HII - 475, OIII - 210 (Total 12.4 hours)

8000 light year away...

and always from your home window.
(sorry for repeating myself, but i don't get enough...)

Big stars, marvelous cosmic tales, and we're stardust...

Thank you for reminding me those wonders !
I am in full wonder...

I look at this and my jaw drops. The glow from Pismis 24 lighting the nebula from within gives the image an incredible depth that's even more staggering when you consider the sheer scale of all. The very size of it goes beyond mind-boggling.
And it's beautiful, too.

As always, I am amazed by the images you capture. This is the kind of image that makes people want to become astronomers and astronauts.

Thank you for your kind words!

Astronomy indeed works on an entirely different scale. I think it's important that we never lose our sense of curiosity and wonder about the world (and universe) beyond us.

I really love your astrophotography, and I don't believe I have ever seen this nebula before.  It's outstanding!

Thank you! If you've heard of/seen the Cat's Paw Nebula, this is right next to it in the sky, and is about the same size.
